Not that I'm active lately (probably will be in the next couple months though), but LJ and FB are the best for me. If we migrated to a "real" forum (on the guild website for instance), it would pretty much need an announcement on LJ or FB because I just don't see myself actively checking the guild website on a daily (or several-times-daily) basis like I do with those sites.
Oh and to answer your questions -- I do check LJ up to a few times a day unless I am extremely overwhelmed with Life. FB announcements might be helpful as occasionally posts on LJ get lost in the shuffle. Personally I adore the LJ method -- I feel like it's easy to organize, easy to keep up with and check in on, and easy to make personal connections with guildies (something I'm often hesitant to do on FB -- which is kind of ironic, as I talk about way more personal stuff on LJ than I do on FB, but FB still feels more personal).
Maybe an email mailing list would be a good alternative to FB/Twitter/etc announcements? That way it's not dependent on which social platform each individual prefers, and no one gets left out because they don't use the platform that the majority uses, it just goes directly to the email address of their choice.
