Default Mode = Guilty

Whatever I do, if it is for my own pleasure, I feel guilty about it. I spend a lot of mental energy on arguing about how it is ok to buy something or do something, but I still feel uncomfortable about it.

I bought myself a book last Friday, after quite a bit of soul-searching, and I smile as I think of how it will look on the security cameras, as I picked it up, looked through it, carried it around, put it back, walked around the store, looked at some other stuff, came back and looked again, put it down, walked to the door, then went back and grabbed it and bought it. The title of this tome? "Presumed Guilty".
It is about women and the way they have been seen and dealt with by the French justice system. It has several broad themes, discussing firstly witches, followed by poisoners, infanticide, the women of the communards and finally the women who had sexual relations with German soldiers during the Occupation. These themes are discussed through written records from the National Archives. It is fascinating, because it discusses the religious bases for guilt, and it brings up Lilith, who isn't in the Bible I grew up with, but was in the Jewish Bible. She was the first with of Adam...and she is represented on the West Facade of Notre Dame as part of the temptation of Eve. Now that is a really bizarre story, Eve is considered the most wicked one, for allowing herself to be tempted, and then for sharing the fruit with Adam, I can't help wondering what she was supposed to have done.
Anyway the book is excellent, and I am forced to think about why I am feeling so guilty for everything, when I find it outrageous the double standards for these people. Did no French man ever have sex with a German woman during the war, why is it that the punishments were often so physically humiliating for women, was it necessary for them to be stripped naked?
If it were only buying the book that weighed on my mind, but I also bought a gadget for chopping vegetables, and a gadget for vacuum sealing food, both on special offer, but neither a necessity. I tell myself that the vacuum packed food will be a way of keeping left overs in the fridge so I can take them for lunch several days later. I never want to take frozen stuff, and some days I have several portions left over, and others there is nothing. I can only see if it works out. 27€ was a very good price, and I have checked that it works.
Photobucket have replied to my email, saying that other people have also had the same problem and they are trying to fix it, so it isn't me or my computer. Meantime I can load one picture very slowly sometimes, by using a different page. I find that this works about once a day. :(
Here is a picture from Guernsey.

and this is the explanation that went with it.
