78 - "[Human] Nature... is what we are put in this world to rise above." - 'The African Queen'
When I first ran into the Ancients... well, okay, I really just ran into one particular Ancient, fine... they were looking for a new planet to call home. And instead of calling their realtor to find them a nice condo with a Southern exposure and a decent view of the Orion arm, they took a really indirect approach. Every time they came across a new species, they dug around inside some poor sucker's head and created this big, elaborate holodeck fantasy about their home planet and used it to gauge its reaction to aliens.
They looked in my head, and got a human reaction. Not from me, but the way I imagined Earth authorities would take to the idea of my friends from Moya hitting the planet. It wasn't good. By the time I figured out that I was being mind-frelled, D'Argo had gotten killed, Rygel died of an Earth disease and was being dissected, and Aeryn and I were on the run.
The Ancients were disappointed. To tell the truth, so was I, even though it'd been my head that made the guesses. And unfortunately, I was pretty damn sure that's how things would go down.
A couple of cycles later, when we really did set foot on good ol' Earth, I was hopeful. I thought I was ready. We'd come to IASA and the world with open arms and open doors. We told them all about what was out there on the other side of creation, shared our lives and stories, let them poke around at our tech, and basically told them just about anything they wanted to know.
All I asked in return was that the knowledge be shared, that everyone on Earth would have a chance to benefit from the things we were bringing. Moya and everyone aboard here was coming to Earth-- not to America or Russia or Lichtenstein or Chad, but Earth. They needed to be united, needed to stand as the human race if there was ever going to be a chance for us to have a place in the bigger picture.
They quarantined the aliens. I expected that. They questioned and interviewed and doubted. I expected that, too.
And after we left, I found out that it all fell apart. IASA and the U.S. Government classified everything, shutting out the rest of the planet. All people cared about was the mystery and the "did they come to help us, or to pave the way to invasion?" crap.
I know I've got the advantage in seeing the big picture. I've lived the life out here, I've been the strange visitor from another planet. I know what's out there, and they... they're still in the dark. They've still got a hell of a lot of work to do before they're ready, which makes it my job to keep 'em safe until they are.
Great.
