Clueless

I am almost 20 and I feel really disconnected and out of control. Yes I have a job ,and a roof over my head, but I really want to be back in college and more importantly connected to a strong community of activists, artists and queers. I've gotten quite a few rejection letters already I am waiting on two more and then that's it, all of my options ( Read more... )

what kind of activism are you looking for? because my friend rich has some small group he set up around new paltz that tries to delve into activism. if you want, i could put you in touch with him.

definitely go back to dutchess. that will make you look more valuable to prospective colleges should you decide to apply again next semester. plus, it will help you get more skills, which will help you in the long run. you could also take art classes there or join one of their clubs to meet other artists in there area.
or apply to cosmetology school. trade schools are good in that its less time and there seems to be a larger market open for their services than others. you already didn't get into the other schools you wanted, so maybe this is a sign you should go? if you hate it, you can always go back to dutchess or another school. maybe the market would even be better and there'd be more room for you.

how many credits do you have from dutchess? if you have a ton, i would say continue applying as a transfer -maybe even finish an associates and then transfer with that, so you look more serious to other schools. otherwise, you will have wasted all yr time and money for nothing. if you only have a few and feel it would help yr chances of getting elsewhere, that may work better.

the community in nyc sucks. i thought it'd be better too. its somewhat better than upstate but it mostly has a lot of self-righteous people from rich backgrounds trying to 'play' artist/activist/etc. and go home/call daddy the second things get difficult. maybe look into portland, austin, or the bay area of ca. i've not lived there but i hear they've got more than i know nyc has to offer.

i don't know you or how you got onto my friends list but yr entry seemed way sad so i thought i'd try to help.

We've met IRL a few times, you added me from one of our mutual friend's lists or a comment or something and I've read about your life ever since. If that weirds you out you can feel free to unfriend me. That said I relate to you alot.

The activism I have been involved in previously has revolved around Disability, Reproductive Justice, Fat Acceptance/HAES, Racism, Sexual Education, LGBTQ rights, and addressing the intersectionality of these issues/identities and privilege.

I am waiting to hear from New Paltz and Smith College but I imagine the only place I have a shot is with New Paltz. The credits from my previous college must look like Bullshit to all these schools because I wasn't graded, I got narratives and a Pass/Fail and then my school closed. I figure if I at least attend Dutchess I can take advantage of programs and get sent to/organize conferences, Lectures, and workshops.

Thanks for taking the time to respond in length, I really appreciate it.
