3AM
She stares at the phone
Willing it to ring
To jar her wide awake from this nightmare
She’s stuck herself in.

Half an hour later,
Staring at the ceiling,
Counting silently the dark spots;
Wishing they’d swallow her up too,
Just like they’re swallowing up the paint.

5am and she’s watching the morning news;
Rampant violence and starvation,
But who says she’s paying attention?
Her eyes are glazed over
Fingers clutched tight over the tiny black remote
And tension lies present in every movement she makes.

6am holds her within lucid dreams
Of being the worm at the end of a fish hook;
Jolted violently awake,
She shudders into the throes of awareness
To face another black-ringed day.
