Title: Dream Big
Pairing: Junmyeon/Jongdae
Rating: G
Length: 1,163 words
Summary: He learns of loss and disappointments and harsh words that cut deeper than he could have thought possible during those seven years, but he also learns about real friendship, of brotherhood, of family that he builds around him and Junmyeon is fragile, yet tough at the same time as he learns of patience and perseverance.
Junmyeon remembers dreaming of thunderous applause, of numerous fans screaming out his name, of the speech that he would give when his single or album gets the number one spot on a music show, when the cheers are all for him.
(At first he had dreamed of being a solo artist, before that dream had been shot down because he had met so many other people with vocals that far bypassed his own, and that was the first time he understood that he would have to work far harder than he had ever had so that he could debut, with a partner or a group of people who he could call his brothers in time, in shared friendship and strife and heartaches, in shared hardships and injuries and victories.)
He remembers being young and naïve and thirteen and watching his favourite artistes win on a music show and being in awe; he remembers attending a concert he had been so excited about when it had been announced over the radio; he remembers being so spellbound by the way the crowd’s energy had surged and built itself upon the voice of the lead singer and the heavy bass beat of the drums and the rhythm that soared along the notes of the electric guitars and keyboards and that was when his wish to stand up on that stage solidified into a dream, into ambition that would guide him to sign up for the auditions at S.M. Entertainment, the most well-known agency in South Korea.
(Junmyeon had no idea that it would take him seven years - seven happy, sad, bitter, sobering and frustrating, but ultimately meaningful years - before he would end up being able to debut with eleven other hopeful boys, some who had been with him almost near the very beginning, and others who had entered his life - especially one who had practically burrowed under his skin, had cannon-balled in and latched onto him like a child to a teddy bear so easily that sometimes it was hard to believe he had joined them the last - and that they would take the world by storm, or that their popularity would catapult them and their first full album to snatch the #1 spot on the Billboard Charts for World Album.
He learns of loss and disappointments and harsh words that cut deeper than he could have thought possible during those seven years, but he also learns about real friendship, of brotherhood, of family that he builds around him and Junmyeon is fragile, yet tough at the same time as he learns of patience and perseverance.)
He’s almost at a loss for words now as the award is handed to him and he grabs onto it automatically, but Junmyeon’s mind is swirling and so full of amazement and disbelief that he’s totally lost what it was he wanted to say but the crowd is listening, is waiting, the world is waiting, his band is waiting, their fans are waiting.
Words spill from his mouth but he’s not quite sure of exactly what it is that is coming out of his mouth because it feels like he’s working on autopilot.
He wonders why it seems that much harder for the words to come when he was able to remain mostly calm and collected when they’d received their rookie awards at MAMA, at the Seoul Music Awards, at the Golden Disk Awards in Malaysia, in China, but maybe it has to do that they’re finally showing their mark in their homeland, right here in South Korea as all twelve of them because although world recognition matters, more than he can ever say, there’s still something about being recognized in their home country and it’s a milestone and- there are a million and one reasons that Junmyeon can think of but then he’s trying so hard to hold all the pent-up emotion within his chest that crawls up his throat and comes out in a choked sob and he can no longer speak because this is everything he has ever dreamt of, this is the original dream that he had had when he was thirteen, and here he is now at twenty-three, ten years later, and it has come true.
There’s his band mates hugging around his shoulder and there’s someone patting his stomach and he wish he could give the evil eye to Jongdae who is trying to stuff another mike to him, although the younger is obviously teary-eyed too, while Baekhyun tries to inconspicuously keep the unintentional troublemaker away for him. Junmyeon is half embarrassed but he can’t stop the tears or the sobs either and after a few more halting starts to the rest of his thank you speech. Luckily Chanyeol saves it by taking over and finishes the rest of it properly.
He thinks he understands what it is when he squats down at the back during the encore, proud and happy and utterly overwhelmed as he watches the backs of his band mates while they start off the song and continue through it, some of them breaking off halfway when they notice that he isn’t joining in the festivities with them and they pull him up and hug him, and Jongdae is whispering, “hyung, you’re the best, you’ve been working so hard up until this moment and this is all for you so come and enjoy it too,” and he lets them drag him forward and he does, he does bask in the moment of it all.
He has no regrets that he started dreaming big so many years ago, not with the way he’s surrounded with this extended family, this sense of accomplishment, this sense of belonging.
Here, this is his dream made real.
夢は見るモンじゃなくsoかなえるモンでしょ?
だからかなわない夢なら夢とは言わない!!
Dreams aren't just something that you look at; they are things that you work towards, no?
That's why a "dream" that can't come true can't be called a dream!!

(Later at night, after the fan sign, after the congratulatory supper before they all retire to their rooms because tomorrow it’s another music show they need to be up at 5am for, there’s a sniffly and slightly teary-eyed Jongdae who climbs into bed with him and wraps his arms around Junmyeon’s waist tightly. Where Jongdae is the one who holds his tears onstage and supports Junmyeon, it’s Junmyeon who whispers to him that he shouldn’t think that he’s not allowed to cry because he has worked just as much and just as hard as the rest of them have and it has nothing to do with how long they’ve been trainees.
Junmyeon holds on tight, and Jongdae holds on tighter.
This is a dream Junmyeon had dreamt of once too.
He finds that this reality is much, much better.)
