In Panem, and especially the Career districts, guts are a commodity.

No one in District Two wants a weak tribute, so if you're of age, you take what you want. If you can't take it, you fight for it.

Once, Cato's neighbor Draim threw a bag of cured meat up a tree and told him and the others if they wanted it they could take it, but they'd better give him a show. To many, the food was the difference between life and death. To Cato, it was sport. Immediately, three of the kids his age scrambled up the tree, trying to reach the food first. Swinging her arms, Keller, a 13 year old in Cato's school, knocked the others to the ground, unconscious. She slid to the foot of the tree, grinning at her prize.

That is, until Cato broke her eye socket in one punch and walked off with the food. Draim made sure Cato never went hungry after that.

Yes, guts in District 2 are as good as gold.
