I've had a mild-to-moderately stressful couple of weeks (insurance stuff around BD's most recent accident is still not completely resolved, so we can't make arrangements for the repairs, which is uncertainty-making all by itself, and I find waiting for resolution on anything other than writing matters stress-making), so finding something to be thankful for was going to be a bit of a challenge today.
Until
I went into a first-grade classroom to read and it was Pajama Day. Something about reading to a dozen pajama-and-slipper-clad, attentive cuties changed everything. I read Munro Leaf's Ferdinand and Marla Frazee's A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever and we had some great conversations. In the case of Ferdinand, it was about the history of publishing (on a first-grade level), as in why the pictures weren't in color. I think I managed to dispell the myth that there was no colored paint or ink in 1936. For A Couple of Boys, the conversation was more about doing things with grandparents and friends. My favorite bit was the exchange about what Zzzzs represent. One guy said, "Snorting," and a girl corrected him: "Snoring." I told them they were both right. In my experience, snoring often leads to snorting.
So I am thankful for Ms. McCuin's First Grade.
I am also grateful for yoga. I enjoy the stretching and flexing, but most of all, I enjoy those days like today when I manage to stay focused on what I am doing, which leaves me feeling centered, focused, and energized for the rest of the day.
And this week, I am thankful I signed up for a stand-up class. It's my adventure for the year, since I've never been a solo performer. The first class was a lot of fun. Josie Leavitt is made of awesome and the group is most supportive. Yay!
