Pretty bored, and ready to write about nothing.
So a topic i'm sick of hearing about? THE SCENE. !!!! Endless babbling starting now.
For, like, 207 years I’ve been constantly bombarded with this vague term. For instance, “She’s such a scene slut,” “I don’t support Bush. That’s going against my scene,” “We’re not popular. we’re better,we’re scene.” “I’m not emo. Look at these jeans. Scene.” “MEAT???!! Lord no. I’m scene.” It’s haunting.
Many scenesters characterize themselves as such with: a-line haircuts, hair dyed black or partly black and partly bleached, tight clothing, thrift store accessories, existentialist literature, thick-rimmed glasses and/or huge sunglasses, deliberate and calculated geekiness, membership to social networking web clients such as Myspace, interest in 80s pop culture, frequenting local shows, chain smoking, a left-wing political slant...
I will admit, I, at one point in my life went to shows consistently, and did the whole scene thing. Like "hey i go to shows every weekend, wear cuter clothes than you and haha look at those kids they think theyre so scene but i'm totally not." I'm on Myspace and I have black band t-shirts. However, I can't say I take Myspace as seriously as the majority of the kids on it do. And i never wear the black t's unless I'm going to sleep or I'm worshipping satan, and the likelyhood of me attending hardcore shows on a regular basis is... nope, not likely.
Here's a new term for the masses, and this would be applied to me.
HIPSTER.
And I'm not even kidding.
This book contains several interesting sections. There's a Hipster Glossary of words that Hipsters use as an alternative to regular English. (Not the same principle as Ebonics, which is not a language in itself.) There are hair styles, music, clothes, careers... it's full of everything a Hipster would ever need to know.
See, the thing is... I didn't NEED a hipster handbook. I knew the entire book without even reading it. I mean... come on, folks. I'm just that deck.
I will embellish in a later post, for those of you who are that deeply interested in my hipster knowlege and skills.
