This...will forever be my shame =___= I dislike the weakness of Kame in this fic, and can't believe I ever wrote something like this. >< Fics like this...are the reason this lj was started. I am totally ashamed of it ><

The machine hooked up to the bed did nothing to calm his nerves, to convince himself that the man lying in the bed was not some stranger that had been picked up off the street, but was indeed his best friend, who had been missing for months, years. He bit his lip as he tried not to think about the ‘what ifs’ that persistently crossed his mind and he tried not to think about what he would have to do in a few moments time.

“I’m going to tell you a story…” Yamapi said trying to ignore the clenching of his heart, and the raw pain that started once more as he remembered…

“Once upon a time, in the city, there lived two princes who were lovers. One was a handsome prince and the other was a pretty prince. Despite a few quarrels, they were never apart for long, so on the day the handsome prince was to come back from trip to a village outside the city, they decided they would go on a date that day”

--

“It’s gonna be so much fun, Pi!” Kazuya said cheerfully to his friend as he walked out of the building with Yamapi, who smiled indulgently at him.

“I’m sure you’ll have fun” Yamapi said with a teasing grin, “Just don’t give me any details, okay?”

Kazuya blushed at the insinuation, “Pi!!”

“…well, Jin does it” Yamapi said.

Kazuya stared wide-eyed at Yamapi.

“Just kidding!” Yamapi hastily said, not wanting to give the younger man a heart attack or something of the sort.

“…for his sake, you’d better be” Kazuya grinned.

Yamapi looked at his watch, “You’d better start walking then if you want to get there on time”

“Right…okay” Kazuya said and with a bright grin on his face, walked off.

Yamapi smiled after him.

--

“But…on that day…the handsome prince never showed up…and he was nowhere to be found...the pretty prince was distraught and he couldn’t stop crying. His heart was broken and the best friend of the handsome prince, could only watch as the pretty prince cried his heart out”

--

Anguished sobs filled the room and it was with a heartbreaking sigh that the man opened the door and tried to find where the other man had hidden himself.

Looking behind the couch, he found the younger man curled up on the floor, pillow stuffed over his mouth as if it could keep the sobs from escaping and he felt a little bit of his heart break as he realized just how hard hit he was by this.
The tears that coursed down the man’s face were never-ending and just when he thought they would stop, they continued once more, fresh sobs that tore at his heart.

“You…why…” the man sobbed, and although he was the only other one in the room, he knew that the younger man was not talking to him.

He was instead, talking about the ghost of someone who was no longer there.

Who had left them…

Who had left him…

With a sigh and trying to keep his own emotions, still burnt raw from the pain, hurt and confusion, Yamapi squatted down next to Kazuya and touched his shoulder gently.

“Pi…” Kazuya looked up and fresh tears flowed down his face again, “Why…”

--

"The pretty prince decided to wait, but no matter how long he waited for him, the handsome prince never came for the pretty prince but the pretty prince kept waiting…he kept waiting and waiting and waiting…”

--

Yamapi stood outside with the umbrella, a wrenching feeling in his heart as he watched the thin, slight figure hunched over in the rain looking ahead with an intense expression. The feelings reflected in those eyes made Yamapi wish he could just take Kazuya’s pain away, the pain of waiting for Jin, who had disappeared.

Jin had not been heard from in days…weeks…months...

Yamapi wanted to tell Kazuya to give up, to start living again.

Without Jin.

However, he could not bring himself to, no matter how hard it was to watch Kazuya waste away like this - waste away for someone who might never return.

Because he did not want Kazuya to hate him…

Because even if it hurt to see Kazuya like this, it would hurt even more if Kazuya no longer trusted him...
If he stayed out here on his own, with no one to watch him…

At least this way - this way, he could watch over Kazuya…

With a determined look, Yamapi walked over to Kazuya again and the younger man looked up.

He smiled, “Hi Pi”

“Kazuya…you should get inside” Yamapi said, trying once more.

Kazuya shook his head with a bright smile that did not reach his eyes and did not fit the rest of his drenched, painful appearance.

Yamapi felt all his determination from before shatter.

“Jin’s going to come soon…I’ll be here waiting for him…”

--

“The pretty prince never stopped waiting. He would go to the same spot every day at the same hour and he would continue to wait for the handsome prince, sure that the handsome prince would remember their date one day and come for him…and the best friend watched with a broken heart as the pretty prince wasted away…”

--

Yamapi tried not to let his tears show as he knelt down next to Kazuya, and sat next to him on the bench. Kazuya looked over at Yamapi, “Pi…?”

“Yeah?”

“What time is it?” Kazuya asked.

Yamapi sighed, “Four o’clock”

“Oh…Jin’s going to come soon, I know it…he’s just a little late”

Yamapi bit his tongue to keep the retort from escaping his lips.

“Pi…?”

“Yes?”

“When is Jin coming?” Kazuya asked and Yamapi felt another part of his heart chip off.

Kazuya was deteriorating, slowly but surely deteriorating...

“When is Jin coming?” Kazuya asked again before a tear trailed down his cheek.

--

“The pretty prince waited for two years; for two years, he went to the same spot and waited for the handsome prince to come for him…but of course, the handsome prince never showed up. One day…”

--

There was no stopping the sob that escaped his lips and Yamapi tried to hide it, looking terrified at Kazuya who was looking much too peaceful for someone who was suffering so much.

Yamapi bowed his head over Kazuya’s body as he tried not to let Kazuya see the tears flowing from his eyes and there was a moment when silence reigned over the room.

“Pi?” Kazuya asked in a weak voice.

“Kazu, shh; you shouldn’t speak too much”

“I need to…” Kazuya said, desperately, grabbing a hold of Pi’s wrist.

“…okay, what is it?”

As usual, Yamapi could not refuse Kazuya and although it was what led to this in the first place, his heart could not bear to see Kazuya’s tears, and could not bear to see a look of hatred and mistrust in Kazuya’s eyes whenever he wanted to stop him from all this - from all this self-inflicted torture he brought upon himself.

Yamapi’s mind and heart were always at war now…

“…tell Jin…that I waited…” Kazuya said softly, “Will you Pi? Tell Jin that I waited for him…I waited for him”
Yamapi could only cry into his hands.

--

“…the pretty prince passed away, because while he wasted his time waiting for the handsome prince, his body wasted away with him until it could not survive the extent of the pretty prince’s love anymore. The best friend felt like dying himself…what if he had done something? What if he had been a bit more forceful, withstood the pain of having the pretty prince hate him, stayed in the rain with him to keep him warm? Did something other than watch...?”

--

Yamapi stared at the picture set up at Kazuya’s funeral and he could not help it. Once again, tears flowed freely down his face and he cried.

“I’m sorry” he said to Kazuya’s family, “I should have tried harder; I should have made him hate me, just to keep him alive longer. I’m sorry; I’m sorry…I’m sorry, I should have done more. I’m so sorry; this is all my fault. I’m - I’m sorry”

He could not continue anymore for the tears were now choking him and his grief felt as though it was strangling him with all its might and he wanted to just lie there and let it choke him.

Let it choke him because he deserved it for not doing more.

He deserved it…

--

“But the best friend did not forget the pretty prince’s last words…and six months later, by chance, he found the handsome prince and he said those words to him…”

Yamapi paused in his story to wipe away the tears from his eyes, his heart hurting too much.

“Jin…Kazuya waited for you” he said in an anguished whisper to the man lying in the hospital bed, “Kazuya waited for you”
