Went to see Captain America last night, a somewhat late showing, and in a small- to mid-sized theater, since we opted for the 2D showing. Still, we got there nearly 45 minutes early, and the best seats were already taken, and the theater was completely full by the time the movie started, so I guess that's good news for Marvel ( Read more... )

Saw Thor on Saturday night. Although I hadn't intended to see it in 3D, there was a problem at the theater with our showing, so we got a free upgrade to the 3D version. Marvel Entertainment just sent me a notice about ticket pre-sales for their upcoming Broadway musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. I'm not inclined to purchase said tickets, but the e-mail had the effect of reminding me that the musical exists at all, because for quite some time, it wasn't going to. I do enjoy it when xkcd does a strip that you have to be somewhat geeky to get...and I get it. It gives me a quiet sense of superiority for 0.01 seconds until I remember that pretty much all of xkcd's readership is geeky enough to get it too.

Saw Iron Man 2 this afternoon. Enjoyed it. Thumbs up. It was loud, it was flashy, it was comic-booky. Perhaps it didn't quite carry the emotional depth of the first one, but that's because the first one had the origin story, and Iron Man's got a pretty good origin story. As it turned out, I didn't see Wolverine over the weekend. I had that surgery instead, and I wasn't really feeling up to it over the weekend. Marvel has been making a habit of doing straight-to-DVD animated movies starring their second-tier characters, and DC has recently gotten in on the act as well, with Superman: Doomsday (forgettable) and Darwyn Cooke's Final Frontier (excellent).
