When Harry asked her to the Yule Ball, it was the highlight of her life. Not an exaggeration in the least, Parvati Patil was going to the Yule Ball with The Boy-Who-Lived. She would be the most envied girl there. Everyone would be watching her as she adorned the arm of Harry Potter. Just the thought of it made her giggle as she thought of it.
It took a bit of convincing but she finally talked Padma into going with Ron Weasley. Her twin sister was not happy to have to go with the sidekick when she would much rather have the main attraction. However, as Parvati was quick to point out, sometimes it pays to be deemed less focused and smart by the Sorting Hat.
The euphoria stayed constant until two days before the Ball. At that point, it crumbled as Parvati realized a distressing state of affairs. She was going to The Ball with The Boy-Who-Lived and she had never kissed anyone other than her parents and her sister. Mortified, she sealed the drapes around her bed, endeavoring to hide until either the Ball passed or she miraculously learned to kiss.
“Vati?” Parvati burrowed deeper under the covers at the sound of Lavender’s voice.
“Vati? What’s wrong? Why won’t you come out?” The drapes rustled as Lavender tried to open them.
“Go away!” Secretly wanting Lavender to stay as she’d been in her bed for hours and she really had to pee, Parvati cried dramatically and loudly enough for Lavender to hear.
“I’m not going to go away, you know that! Now, open up and let me in!” Waving a hand over her shoulder as she pulled the blankets completely over her head, Parvati felt the bed sink as Lavender sat down.
“What in the name of Merlin is wrong with you?” Parvati’s breath hitched and she waited for the comforting circles on her back. A sigh left her lips as Lavender rubbed. It was nice to have a predictable friend, someone not like her at all.
“I’m not going to the Ball.” Mumbling into her pillow, her face heated up as Parvati spoke her woes.
“What do you mean you’re not going to the Ball? You’re going with Harry Potter, you lucky girl! Come on, out of there now!” A shiver raced across Vati’s spine at the cold air that rushed in where the blankets had been when Lavender ripped them off. Vati quickly turned on her back and threw an arm dramatically over her eyes.
“I can’t go to the Ball, Lavender! I’ll make a fool out of myself! It will be wretched and everyone will laugh at me!”
“What complete and utter shite, Vati! You are the best dancer in the group, you are the most beautiful girl in Hogwarts AND you have stunning fashion taste. Every girl and some of the guys are quite envious of you!” Pulling her arm off one of her eyes, Parvati peered out at Lavender.
“Truly, Lav?” At the nod, Parvati felt a bit of her old pride come back before her realization hit her again.
“But, Lav! I don’t know how to kiss and you know and I know and everyone knows that boys always kiss girls or well, other boys sometimes, at the ends of balls. What am I going to do?” The arm once more flopped over Parvati’s eyes until it was pulled away by an insistent hand.
“You are such a drama queen, Parvati. I’ve never been kissed either but you don’t see me hiding in my bed!” Lavender’s exasperated look coupled with her no-nonsense tone upset Parvati. This wasn’t the sympathy she wanted.
“Well, it’s not like you’re going to the Ball with Harry Potter, now is it? You weren’t who he wanted, now were you? No, that would be me! Me in front of all those people. Me everyone wants to be. Me me me ME!” Unable to stop the hurtful words pouring out of her mouth, Parvati watched, stunned, as Lavender’s expression turned to hurt. When Lavender went to leave the bed, Parvati grabbed her by the arm and pulled her back down.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know where those awful words came from. Please, you’re my best friend, you know that. If it were you, I’d be so happy for you. I’m just so upset right now. Forgive me?” Lavender nodded but Parvati could sense that she was still a little upset.
“What am I going to do, Lav? I can’t go to the Ball with Harry and not know how to kiss! It’s a disaster! Why did I ever agree to go?” Lavender got a gleam in her eye and Parvati knew that she’d come up with a solution. “What is it? What did you think of?”
“We’ll learn together.” When Parvati gave Lavender a blank stare, she continued to explain. “We’ll teach each other how to kiss. I’m sure it’s not that hard.” At the continuing blank stare, Lavender sighed before putting her lips against Parvati’s.
The feeling of lips pressing against hers shocked Parvati out of her stupor. It was a pleasant feeling but somehow she thought there would be more. When she opened her mouth to say so to Lavender, the touch of tongue on tongue forced any thoughts out of her head.
Sliding her head to the side, Parvati pressed harder against Lavender’s lips. Together, the two girls lost their hesitation as they also lost themselves in the kiss. The burning in her chest compelled Parvati to pull back so that she could grab a breath. Faces close, neither Lavender nor Parvati moved as they stared at each other, panting slightly.
“Well, that was nice. Now we can say we know how to kiss, right, Vati?” Parvati couldn’t help the slight shaft of pain that lanced through her heart as Lavender stood up and left the bed. They were friends and this was just a little kissing lesson, right? She didn’t know how to answer that and, even more important, didn’t want to answer that.
