Went to the boy's high school basketball game last night, where I had been a sub, was the last one of the year and I had promised a player on the team at tbe start of the season that I would go to a game and had never made it. Plus, I had some ulterior motives, wanted to get the word out to some of the students about what happened to me and maybe make the principal sweat a little. At least make him see that I'm not going to just go away.
The student section was behind one of the baskets, and they would chant things towards the other team and the refs, and I was struck with an idea. I went over and several called out my name and i said that I needed a favor.
During the game, the gym pretty full, and the principal sitting in the bleachers across from the students they chanted, 'Bring back Woody...bring back Woody...bring back Woody.' They did it in the first and second half. Was pretty cool and loved rubbing it in the principals face. It shows that I have the students behind me and that I care. Granted it didn't score me any points with him, but I don't care about that.
Is just nice to hear your name being chanted.
I thanked some of the students after the game and one said, 'No thank you.'
And that is what being a teacher is all about, and even if I'm never in another classroom I'll always have that moment and the knowledge that I made a difference in someones life. And they can't take that away from me.
