Y'all remember that image of nine woman musicians I was trying to track down? Muses indeed -- the Nine Muses from a manuscript of Martin le Franc's "Le Champion des Dames" (1440-42), as a matter of fact.
That particular discovery led me to "A Checklist of Musical Instruments in Fifteenth Century Illuminated Manuscripts at the Bibliotheque Nationale"; I don't have JSTOR access but will definitely have to hunt that article down.
The Bowles checklist, in turn, led to this intriguing bibliography of music iconography online.
I do love the Internet, but boy, I wish I could squeeze some more library time into my schedule. Maybe once I go on leave from work at the end of July...
