I need advice from you all! I'm looking for a good TV series or two that I can watch on DVD-- preferably one with multiple seasons I can get from the public library or rent. I don't have cable, so I know I've entirely missed a lot of high-quality shows ( Read more... )

My current shows not on you list are Veronica Mars, House M.D., My Name is Earl and Doctor Who. You should definately check out Arrested Development.

I hear the David Tennent and Peter O'Toole version of Casanova may be available on Region 1 DVD now.

Can you tell me anything about Veronica Mars or Arrested Development to sell me on them??

I've never watched any Doctor Who, and that must be remedied! I just looked it up on Amazon to try to figure out where to start and I'm horribly confused. Did the show have multiple runs?

I was gonna recommend Veronica Mars, but someone beat me to it! It's an amazing show about a girl who's best friend is murdered. Her dad was the sheriff, but after the way he handled the case there was a special election to get him ousted. He know has a private investigating company and Veronica works for him. She does most of the stuff around town because he's always busy on out of town jobs. She's also trying to solve her best friends murder. It's really good.

Ooh, this sounds a little bit like Twin Peaks, which I adore. Thanks for the suggestion!

I swore I would never watch another high school show again. And then I saw Veronica Mars. Imagine not a Nancy Drew, but with the hardboiled sensibility of a Sam Spade or a Philip Marlow. This girl is cool. I want to be her when someday I grow up ( ... )

Thanks so much for all the info. OK, VM is now on the short list even though I didn't think I'd be interested in any high school shows. Lol. I'll have a look at AD when I can, too.

Should I start with the David Tennent? Or do I have to do all the other decades first to appreciate it?

I haven't seen any of the David Tennent episodes, but I watched quite a bit of the Christopher Eccleston season, and I pretty much understood what was going.

You do not have to watch the other decades. However...

The Doctor always has a companion. When it started in the 60's, it was kind of an older school girl and the Doctor was more like a mentor. Over the years, the companions have changed in character... but it's basically stayed platonic for the kids.

But, the revised series has been allowed to be the romance that it was never allowed to be before. And that story of the Doctor and Rose (Billie Pipper) really begins with the start of the revived series with the Nineth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston.

So I would say start at the beginning of the revived series. I did actually like Eccleston... even though he quickly was overshadowed David Tennent for me.

Also, when you get to that point, don't miss the video of the Nineth Doctor becoming the Tenth (Tennent). It only appeared on a charity show in the UK, not as part of an episode. It may or may not be on the DVD's, but it is on YouTube and around the internet.

I'm getting to far ahead here, aren't I? lol
