I never heard that it was supposed to "star" anyone; the point of an ensemble cast is that it doesn't.
I don't mean this as a criticism, only as genuine curiosity, because I always wonder when people say that: do you like the show itself, or is it just seeing Dom regularly that appeals? (Or a little of both?) *curious*
If it's truly and ensemble cast, then Matt Fox shouldn't be the only male who figures so prominantly in the episodes, and then pushed forward for consideration in the Leading Actor category
Not that he doesn't do good work, but is his role so much more important than everyone else's? I didn't use to think so, until his father started showing up so prominantly, and figuring into so many story lines.
For a character that was supposed to be killed off in the pilot, this show seems to revolve more and more around just him.
And it would be nice to see more of Dom onscreen than we have.
True. I think that's ABC's decision (to put him forward for consideration) as opposed to anyone directly involved in the show, but I could be wrong, and believe me, less Jack would make me happy. Still, I think he's actually had less prominence this season, perhaps signaling an evening-out of the roles.
I guess, not liking Charlie that much out of all the characters, I'm not quite as concerned about that factor as many other fans. But he of course does a good job with the role (even when the writers don't).
I understand what you mean about not liking Charlie so much as a character. It feels like all season I've been waiting for the writers to do something more interesting with the character, but it doesn't seem to be happening. Aargh.
Again, I guess I'm just frustrating myself with unrealistic expectations. =/
And I agree Dom does do an amazing job with what little he's got to work with.
I think I watched the pilot episode waaaaay too many times in the months prior to the show starting. I understand that it's an ensemble cast, but I think the expectation of Dom getting a lot of screen time got a little too engrained in my head.
I love the show, but I'm starting to feel that the whole ensemble thing just stretches too thin with the long breaks between new episodes. Weeks and weeks without seeing Dom is too much.
And I really feel that, despite the ensemble nature of the cast, some of the characters are featured much more than others-- I think if you add up the time Charlie's been on screen and compared it to Jack or Kate's screen time, there would be a big difference. (Though that could just be a distortion on my part since I'm in 'junkie who didn't get her fix' mode at the moment). >_>
I guess I never really assumed they were pushing Dom to have as big a role as the other two - it always seemed to me that they were (wisely) using him to secure his ready-made fanbase, as opposed to featuring him in any more special way than most of the other characters

Ooh, I forgot you are into the big picture with production, etc. Interesting insights there.
You know, on the season 1 dvd they said they hired Dom because "he's just such a good actor." I always assumed that was more of a factor than the fan-base. Though they certainly capitalized on the internet fan-base thing to promote the show.
I agree they're using some characters to tie the threads together more. I tend to enjoy episodes the most when the backstory has something to do with the island's mysteries. Otherwise it has a bit of that "filler" feel to it. And I think a lot of aspects of the show, especially the slower character-development parts, are suffering from the rerun situation. The timing just seems off. It's like it's written to be aired each week (like 24), but we don't get to experience it that way. (Not that I'd be happy with 7 new-episode-free months each year, either. Lol).
Oh, I think they did hire Dom because he's such a good actor - the same reason they hired Yunjin Kim, for example, who is HUGE in Korea, according to my brother who lives there (think Tom Cruise, but more with the lovely and less with the crazy), and considered probably among the most talented actors from a foreign market. But I don't know that that means they intend to especially feature either of them due to that high level of talent. I hate to say it, but Evangeline Lily's pretty mediocre in terms of acting from what we've seen so far (quite possibly due to lack of experience, granted, but I'd say that by the same token Josh Holloway has taken to the gig far more easily and with just as little experience), and she still remains featured above many more experienced and worthy actors, so I guess that's probably not their primary consideration (quite unfortunately
