I wasn't going to post this for a few hours, because it's very late here. But there's been some commenting about the lack of pictures, and I know I won't feel like doing this after I wake up. So without further ado, I'm sharing with you my first sucessful act of furniture construction!
This is a project I've been working on in various stages since June. It's become very important for me to make as many elements of my dollhouse as possible, partly because I've never found anything I'm in love with in the stores, and partly because of costs. A quality double bed can start at $20-30 - without sheet and duvet set. I made this project entirely from things I had laying around or found as scrap. It's not as nice as a store-bought set, but as they say, I suffer from short arms and deep pockets.
The frame is basic pine plywood, and the posts come from a stick of scrap cherry edging. I stained it and rubbed in Minwax furniture finishing wax to get a glossy appearence.
A friend gave me a bolt of fabric she'd intended to make purses from, but never found the time. I really liked the lurid, shiny pink, and while I know they don't make real duvets out of the stuff, it fit in with the theme of my house (tacky drag queen, I'm coming to realize).
Nothing in my life is accomplished without constant cat supervision.
The little pillows can come out of their cases. This was something I knew I wanted from the start, because I can bang out dozens of cases if I decide I want to change color schemes.
Doodle was a big help arranging the shot.
The fitted bottom is also removeable. I know there are easier ways to do this, but I found I couldn't take them. Everything had to be as in the real world, or else I know I'd come away dissatisfied.
Under the fitted bottom I have a mattress.
In front of the mattress I have a cat. I swear, the only ones who didn't participate were the snake and the frog.
I spent a lot of time worrying that the bed wouldn't be the right size for the dolls I'm using, which are Doctor Who figures like Repair Droid 7, here. I have difficulty converting to scale, so there was much holding the dolls up at various stages of the assembly to see what worked. Fortunantly, it turned out well.
Good night.
