Dust and Mud

It is ugly here.

Not so much because it is a naturally ugly place, but because it is a fortified place.

I work in a palace, though, literally. Julia has pics, you can ask her for them if you want. I'm sure when I get back I'll organize it all into albums and then fail to publish it.

There's a firefight or two daily, a couple of rockets or mortars a day, none nearby, yet. Everything I hear of the violence is well away from the Camp. I consider this a Good Thing.

Internet connectivity sucks balls. Our bandwidth is severely limited for leisure. I can live with that. I have a phone with which to contact my wife, so it is all good. I've been brushing up on my C++. Unfortunately, my book on the subject is fairly old, so when I type up the program examples, g++ barks at me about deprecation a bit. I'm not overly concerned.

I'm living in an air-conditioned "transient" tent, capacity twenty. It's not too bad, really. I got a bottom bunk after two days. My sleep schedule still hasn't adjusted completely, but I'm not feeling too tired or anything. A little bored sometimes, but mostly I'm just working. A lot. That's pretty cool, feels good to be doing something more than shuffling paper around in Arlington.

Cool picture from Ft. Benning. Army brats will probably not be impressed, but I found this sign on one of the sleepy little roads in Harmony Church pretty discordantly nifty.

In the words of my wife, Spiderman 3 was a chick flick. That being said, it was still pretty funny. The action sequences were nice, and I thought Topher did a good job of being a real jerk.

Countdown:
T-MINUS BLAH BLAH BLAH

It rained off and on for a couple of days here and turned the nasty fine dust into a nasty thin slurry over a nasty thick clay. Nasty. It's dried up again, mostly. The birds love it. Speaking of, two birds I'd like identified. There's a crowlike critter (same voice as a crow, same build) with black wings and a mostly white body. There's also a dark-beaked white waterbird that has stilty-type legs that I saw wading around in one of the canals. It is actually smaller than the crow, except for the legs.

I'll sign off with a fun story.
