Update on RL - for better or worse!

Jan 13, 2012 21:57

That should probably read "worse for wear" ha ha.   I heard today that my biggest project at work (which I've been working on since November 2010) and which had a deadline of this coming Tuesday 17th January has just been pulled (i.e. is not to complete - aaaagh!) so I went home and did this:

Hello! Good to hear from you. Must tell you - I got a very funny annual news-sheet from Dr S Turnbull at Christmas with lots about the upcoming keanu reeves 47 ronin film (Dr T is presiding over history, authentic and general Japanese-ness) and his dog Buster. I'm very flattered to be on his mailing list. Must grovel some more ha ha He has a new title "revenge of the 47 ronin" (spot the subtle tie-in) pub. Aug 2011 - I have yet to add a copy to my collection.

Oh, the cocktail is Blue Lagoon:

- mine looks a bit funny cos we only had cloudy lemonade - was hoping that the lime twizzle would distract from the cloudiness.

Place mats are tough as h*ll - you can cut bread on them and are assorted birds

How are you doing? Good luck with the new term and Happy New Year!

I am curious about that film.... but I really hate Keanu Reeves.
That's awesome, though! Still so jealous you got to meet him ;~;

I love the blue lagoon! Although mine always taste of lemonade and nothing much else. Still, blue lemonade! ...thinking about it, I feel tempted to get some Cherryade and try making one with that... Purple Lagoon!
Rather than a lagoon, the cloudy lemonade makes it look more like ocean water! I remember the deeper parts of the red sea looking that kinda colour!

I'm going okay. Just working at a crummy little coffee shop now, so I wish you all the luck I seem to not have for the new year!

Dr T says that the explosions in the film are worth all the rest of the imperfections :=) Yep, I got to meet him twice - once through my impudence and the second time through his kindness to his groupies! His Xmas letter was very funny: he suggests that, when eventually watching the film, his friends should turn to the stranger in the next seat in the cinema and remark deadpan, "You know, if it wasn't for Stephen Turnbull, those shields would be the wrong shape." !!

I wonder if the blue plus red would give you purple? If the colours are like watercolour paint, the result may be brown - giving you Polluted Lagoon ha ha

Well, I'm glad you have some paid work down there. I know it sounds glib but almost any job has got some value - even if only for the proof (to people offering better jobs) that you can stick it and are reliable about things like punctuality etc. I appreciate that you need to find ways to keep your brain alive whilst doing this sort of work though. Hopefully the internet helps with that.

It IS extremely annoying and frustrating but I'm moved on in my mind now. Just need to archive all the paperwork when I get to the office on Monday and dive headfirst into something else.

We probably don't use the term "drop off" in that sense. We'd more likely say "pull out" (bit like troops pulling out of a battle zone!). You can say that the project has been "pulled", "scratched", "derailed", or "cancelled" - the result's the same!

Oh, at least your tiresome bosses didn't like the other company's work either. Can't you apply for work/a job at the other "pretty serious" company?? Sounds as though your work is good enough.

Lots of friends gave me cocktail ingredients for my birthday in November so it seemed a shame not to try a few! Citrus is the base of curacao so your orange juice idea probably works nicely, even if the colour is green.

Thanks - I'm sort of enjoying the camera but more LEARNING it at the moment. Sometimes I think I need to take it to obedience classes...

You've been working on this project for over a year and they decide to pull it days before the deadline. Aaaagh, indeed!

Very pretty drinks. I love what you did with the citrus. The vivid blue makes me think of a mad scientist's laboratory!

Glad to hear all is well with your computer and that you've found a way to increase your enjoyment with the new camera.

Is extremely boring but I've shaken the dust of my feet now (mentally) and will just archive the paperwork on Monday and move on to other urgent things.

The blue curacao IS a crazy colour! Did you fiddle about with copper sulphate as a kid at school? Was very much that colour! The lime twizzle was an experiment (first time I've tried it) but needs a knife with smaller serrations - I used a vegetable knife which was too coarse. Now I know!

Yes, I'm looking forward to more poems with pictures and other photo-y things this year. Hopefully I might get to post pictures a but more often here too.

I keep following that news story about Nome in Alaska and the "rescue" fuel tanker. For reasons of ice, it reminds me of you! It is icy here too this morning - the grass is hard and crunchy and the water (puddles, birdbath) is frozen solid. I might rename my garden Little Canada ;=)

Thanks for your visit here.

I don't remember playing with copper sulphate, but anti-freeze came to mind.

I haven't heard of the fuel tanker story. Will have to look it up. We've finally got a real wintery looking scene around here, after a rather slow start. Went for a cold walk yesterday, crunching through the snow. I like the idea of an ice garden.

Ha ha - yes, antifreeze is that colour TO WARN YOU NOT TO DRINK IT!! Happily the flavour of blue curacao is oranges not chemicals. But it sure does stop me freezing ;=)

Fuel tanker story is a bit of a heroic adventure: the town of Nome didn't get its fuel delivery in the autumn and will run out of diesel and petrol/gas in late Feb/March. Normally there is no sea delivery to this part of Alaska till June when the ice breaks up but the tanker plus a heavy ice-cutter is forcing a path through the ice to keep the population warm and powered till the normal shipping can start again. The tanker is a special one with a hull built to withstand the pressure of 4ft of sea-ice; Nome has about 2-2.5 ft ice so the tanker should be OK to pump off its cargo through a mile-long hose. Nobody seems interested in this story except me (and Nome) but it is an adventure to do this for the first time in Alaskan history.

An ice garden should have ice fruit. What will this be, do you think? I favour a snow peach and an ice pear.
