Ok, so I wanted to see Twilight again to try to go in with no bias, as the first time Mel and I went to see it, I couldn’t watch it without criticizing most of the film. I was so hardcore against it mainly because my wife had spent nearly every waking minute reading the damn books and I was a little jealous from the lack of attention (yes, I’m very child-like in that I almost always want her full attention…ok, not really, but there are times). So Mel and I went to see it again last weekend and I have to admit, damnit, I liked it. First things first, it is a chick flick, have no delusions, but I can get into a chick flick as long as I know that beforehand; I have to be prepared. Another problem I had with my first viewing was that I had watched the trailer, which portrayed the film as an action/vampire flick, along the lines of Underworld (which is also a vampire love flick), so I was pumped, then when I saw it, I realized that they showed every action scene in the trailer. Really, it was a brilliant move on their part, make the trailer look exciting to snag the guys and let the books snag the chicks and you’ll bring home bank. Genius. Ok, so conclusion, it was a pretty good flick, and the soundtrack is impressive (kinda goth/industrial)
Also, I picked up the last book in the Night Watch series, Twilight Watch, and I read the first couple of pages and I’m kinda lost. It doesn’t seem to fit with the other two books, but I guess I’ll have to keep reading to find out.
Ok, so for the sake of hopefully getting into any grad school, I’m going to start spending my evening cramming for the GRE. I picked up two algebra books last night and I think I’m going to have to buckle down and start studying. Buy stock in Starbucks, they’re definitely going to be getting quite a bit of money from me again over the next few weeks.
Moving on, I read my first graphic novel last weekend, The Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes. I have to say, I never thought I’d like reading a graphic novel, but Neil Gaiman is a total genius! I loved it. As a matter of fact, it is the first in a series of 11 graphic novels and I can’t wait to go buy the next one.
In closing, I’m going to get political. Being an amateur political scientist, I’m starting to wonder if Russia is trying really hard to start WWIII? First they send warships through the Panama Canal for the first time in over 60 years; then they send warships to Cuba to meet with the Cuban Navy (sounds like an oxymoron to me), placing Russian warships within a couple hundred miles of the United States. OK, so I guess we are going to let this one slide, as our government has (publicly) done nothing. Then, the crazy Russians go and shut down an oil pipeline to Europe, leaving a dozen countries either completely without oil or leaving them in short supply. Frankly, if they keep pushing, the democracies of the world (mainly us, I’m sure) are going to push back. Frankly, we’ve already won one Cold War, is it going to take a true war, or God forbid, a nuclear war to keep that stupid Putin in line?
Frankly, I say, we’ve used it twice, we have more than they do, lets drop one in Siberia, in the middle of nowhere where no one will be harmed, and televise it with President Bush telling Putin, “Keep it up and the next one drops even closer to home…” Yeah, yeah, I know, you’re all going, “But they’ll just turn around and bomb us!” I know this, but what would their first three targets be? Washington, New York, LA. Good riddance, nothing good ever comes from them anyway. Plus, I want Obama to come into office and have to do something right off the back! No, really through, it is scary, Putin is crazy and I’m afraid that if he does keep it up, he’s going to start a war, and frankly, I don’t think Obama is going to be a good war time president.
Speaking of Obama, he is about to announce that his head of the CIA is going to be Leon Panetta, an administrative expert, and his director of national intelligence is Dennis Blair, a retired naval office. Now if this isn’t a cluster-fuck of an idea, I can just see Obama, “I want my two most senior intelligence officers to have NO intelligence experience.” I’m sorry, but if you have ABSOLUTELY NO INTELLIGENCE BACKGROUND, what the fuck are you going to do as the Director of the Central Intelligence and Director of Nation Intelligence. I started to have faith in Obama when I saw his selections for his cabinet, but the more and more I see of him, the more I feel we are completely and utterly fucked. God save the United States (or the Queen, then at least we could all go back to England as refugees! I know, horrible joke, sorry).
So long, and thanks for all the fish. W. Mutt
