Alvin and the Chipmunks
2 1/2 Bones
Undeniably cute, the movie has quite a few good parts, but falls short as a whole. Helping raise its rating is Jason Lee (of Mallrats fame) playing the lead. I liked his rendition of a character I remember from when I was little.
The animation of the chipmunks was done well, and most of the story stayed true to what I remember of the story from when I was a kid, but where it failed was in its believability. For any movie to work, it has to draw you into its world, you have to believe it and invest part of yourself in it, and because of the fact that no one, outside of Lee, is confused or disbelieving about three talking (singing) chipmunks.
It was cute, your girlfriend or kids will probably like it, and taking your woman to see it in the theater may earn you some fornication time with her, but its not one you'll enjoy. All in all, suffer through it to get some play, but otherwise, avoid it like the plague.
