Suspecting that Will is on the other side of the door, you brace one hand on the wall and one hand on the knob. Pulling the door open, you find you’re not prepared for the person who’s actually standing there.
Emily.
Fuck.
You had been planning to go see her, but having the option to walk to her room next door left you the possibility of backing out. But now she’s here, standing in front of you, staring at you when you don’t answer her question. A small shake of your head brings you back to reality.
“I’m sorry, what?” you apologize.
“I asked you if you were okay,” she tells you. The look she gives you vaguely resembles one you would give Reid if he had sprouted a second head.
“Of course,” you lie with a nod. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“Because I went out to my balcony for air and heard you crying,” she states. “Where’s Will?”
“Gone,” you say and move away from the door. You leave the door open and hope she follows you inside. The soft click of the door followed by hesitant footsteps confirms your hope.
“Where did he go?” she asks softly.
“Hopefully back to New Orleans,” you sigh, taking a seat on the bed. You suppress the butterflies in your stomach when she sits on the bed beside you. “I asked him to go,” you explain, staring at your hands. You know that if you look at her she’ll be able to see right through you.
She takes your hand, the same way she did months earlier when Garcia had been shot. You know it’s only meant out of comfort but your heart still skips a beat. “Why?”
“He told me he loves me,” you chuckle nervously.
You can hear the smile cross her face. “That’s normally a good thing Jay-j.”
“I know,” you agree in embarrassment.
“Do you not feel the same way?” she questions when you fall silent. You nod, unable to find the words, afraid that you might confess to loving her instead of him. “But this isn’t why you were crying,” she states.
“No,” you whisper. You stand up and walk over to the glass door, resting your head on it. You can see her reflection out of the corner of your eye. You sigh. “I’m in love with someone else,” you confess.
“Is that why you were crying?” she asks. You nod slightly. “Why?”
“I’m afraid this person doesn’t feel the same way,” you tell her. “And I’m afraid that if I tell them how I feel I’ll lose the friendship that we have.”
“What makes you think that he won’t feel the same way?” she questions, not getting up from the bed.
“Because she was the one who told me that Will and I would be good together,” you confess. You close your eyes, unsure you would be able to stand the look of disgust cross her face.
You wait to hear her footsteps taking her out of the room but they never come. Your eyes open slowly to see her sitting stalk-still on the edge of the bed. Her hands are in her lap and she’s staring at you intently. “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?” she whispers.
“Yes,” you nod. You take a deep breath before turning to face her. “You’re the someone else Emily. I could never love Will because I’m in love with you.” She didn’t say anything and your hands start to fidget. “Say something,” you request nervously. Your eyes flick back and forth between your hands and her face, unable to concentrate on either while you hold your breath waiting for her to respond.
“Then why did you kiss him?” she finally says. You can hear the hurt in her voice and your eyes are unable to meet hers as guilt floods your system.
“I thought that you didn’t want me,” you whisper. “He was just a fill-in.”
“Why didn’t you say anything sooner?” she asks.
Your heart plummets to your feet. You were too late. She doesn’t want you anymore. “I was afraid,” you mutter. You’re so busy studying your fidgeting hands that you fail to notice her standing up and crossing the room until she’s directly before you.
“JJ, look at me,” she requests gently. You do as you’re told and see your surprise reflected in her eyes as a small tear slips past your control. “I wish you would have said something sooner,” she says.
Why does she have to rub in the fact that you’ve lost her? “Would it have changed anything?” you ask instead.
“Well we wouldn’t be standing here right now,” she smiled. You lower your eyes back to your hands and feel your hair form a curtain around your face. You find yourself wishing that she would just leave. Her head dips down until she’s peering into your face. “JJ, we wouldn’t be standing here because we would be in bed,” she smirks.
Oh.
OH.
Your head snaps up in shock, almost hitting hers. “You mean…” your voice trails off, afraid you’re hoping for too much.
“I love you too JJ,” she breathes before sealing her lips to yours.
You had heard stories about seeing stars and fireworks when you were kissed by the person you were supposed to be with. After failing to have this reaction from all the kisses you had participated in during your lifetime, you thought that the stars and fireworks only belonged in fairytales.
Until now.
Emily’s kisses went beyond fireworks and could only be compared to the most intense, earth-shattering orgasm that you had only experienced during your fantasies of her. You can’t help but wonder what it would be like to make love to her, figuring it would be similar to witnessing a super nova. You groan at the thought.
She seems to take this groan as your unspoken encouragement as she walks you over to the bed with your mouths still connected. As you tumble backwards onto the mattress, you cling to her, knowing that the train wasn’t going to stop until you were both tumbling over the edge of ecstasy.
Maybe Will showing up hadn’t been such a bad thing at all.
You can run into my arms
It's OK don't be alarmed
Come here to me
There's no distance in between our love
So go on and let the rain pour
I'll be all you need and more
Because
When the sun shines, we’ll shine together
Told you I'll be here forever
Said I'll always be a friend
Took an oath I'ma stick it out till the end
Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we'll still have each other
