The (female) grad student who was my senior in my old lab at CSU told me once she asked a female physics professor from MIT how she was able to be so successful in a field that's really not meant for women. The professor replied, "It's not that physics isn't meant for women, it's not meant for humans. You have to make yourself almost inhuman to deal with the BS in this field ( ... )

A few posts down you use your real name, and you say you're a student in Boulder, so you're not very anonymous.

I try not to attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence. I do think that the top tier of any profession is probably pretty self-centered. Scientists perhaps more so because following social norms isn't terribly valued. Still, I've found mentors and peers along the way who've looked out for me, and I hope I can do the same for others.

Looking forward to swimming starting up again? I sure am. I'm getting fat and slow, ha ha.
