Ahhh

Well, so far work has refused to sign a renewal on one of our software agreements. (Its only been on the desk for 2 months, so give it time) $600 for the renewal and now that semester is back, students are asking about it, but we can't give them the software because the renewal isn't signed. That doesn't bother me too much, it would severely annoy me if I was a student, but I'm not. What is more interesting is they don't sign the renewal soon, the licences on our machines expires and then we either have to uninstall it there or buy individual licences.

I just did the sums, it will cost us $350 per machine to licence the software. We have it installed on about 250 machines and it is pretty well essential software for us. I know some people won't pay it, so lets say we only install it on 200 machines. That's still $70000.

So they have a choice, pay $600 and we're covered, plus can provide it to the 1200 students we currently have. Or they can pay $70000 and not be able to hand it out. Hmmm... which to do...

I swear, licencing in this place is amazing. In my department, we're not too bad, people accept that there is a cost associated with software, but it other places...
Them: "I have photoshop on this machine, I also want it on that one, that one and that one"
Us: "Umm, sure, we get a good deal, its about $300 per installation, so that will be about $900 more, which account will you pay out of?"
Them: "But I've already paid for it, I just want it on 3 more computers. Look, just give me the cds and I'll do it"
Us: "Umm... no."
