The joys of working by the hour, or why I am not doing Dickens this year

Most of you know the main reason i am not working Dickens Fair is because of my work Schedule.  I worked 3 of the 4 Dickens weekends this year, and when your workday starts around 7 AM meaning you are up at 6 ish, the idea of then putting on your costume and rushing around is just not fun.  While this was the main reason there were some other small ones that I think I finally feel comfortable naming.

1- Money, Dickens is a WHOLE that you throw money in.  At minimum you pay for your costume, I am ALWAYS getting flack from the Costume Staff that my outfit is not "Historically accurate" and then thousand changes I have to make.  I am going to leave the whole questions of "Historical" for another time because that is just Bull shit.  Then you pay registration and for parking.  That is alot of money if you are working by the hour and still want to afford Christmas Gifts for people, never mind rent and other bills.  And let's face it, who works Dickens and NEVER ONCE buys ANYTHING? There is more money right there, weather it is food or a gift for someone, you spend more money.  Plus there is Gas to get everywhere...

2 - Illness, EVERYONE gets sick working the Dickens Fair.  Sickeness means not being able to go to work, that means less money, see above rant.

3 - Time, My Significant other does not work Dickens, neither does my family.  So on top of the time that is taken away from spending time with all of them there is the time that is spend ARGUING with them about the time I am not spending with them.  This happened with my dad alot.  "Why do you have to drive, can't you get a ride, do you have to pay for parking, why, can you talk to the people in charge?"  ARG!!!!

money, family, dickens
