the anti-theme

It's a cold winter's night in Hobart (the temperature is one single lonely digit) so what better recipe to whip up than rich chocolate ice cream!

Personally I wouldn't bother with ice cream unless I had an ice cream maker. Actually I don't, but my family own enough electrical appliances to open a small store, so I stole borrowed my sister's Breville Scoop Factory (the product has now been updated). This recipe comes from the instruction manual, though I varied it a little. I like it because it uses one whole egg (some recipes use a lot of yolks - meaning you have to find a use for the whites) and is simple - mix the ingredients, chill, pour into the machine and turn on - out comes the ice cream!

Melt 250g Cadbury dark cooking chocolate, cool a little. (try milk choc for a less intense flavour) Add to blender along with 1 egg, 1 cup chocolate custard, 3/4 cup sugar and 2 cups cream. Refrigerate for 1 hour.
Turn on the ice cream maker and pour in the mix. When the mix begins to thicken add some grated chocolate (I used 4 squares of top deck)
Pour into container and freeze for a couple hours, then grab a spoon and dig in! I had mine in a danish cone with chopped nuts, whipped cream and hot fudge :D
