Sweetie's laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000) is dead in an interesting way. It starts up, it complains about a missing file iertutil.dll, then complains it can't find null, and then starts up in a pretend sort of way, which is to say the desktop comes up without the taskbar or any icons.

The solution on microsoft.com is to reinstall Explorer 7 (or 6, depending on how old the advice is). The problem is, POST ignores the DVD drive, so I can't boot from that, and once it finishes booting, it can't see thumb drives because of another file it claims is missing.

Also, during boot, it lists F2 as entry into setup, and F12 as the entry into a boot menu, but pressing either one gets you a screen message where it claims some module isn't plugged in. It also claims you can continue into the boot process by hitting the Esc button, but when I press that it ignores the keystroke.

So, can anyone think of any options available to me other than shipping it back to Dell to fix at probably exorbitant prices?
