Carole returned home from work confused and concerned, having just heard Finn’s garbled message on her phone.

“What’s happened?” she asked, sitting next to an upset Burt on the sofa.

“I’m sorry. I had to protect him - I had to - I didn’t know what to do…” the pain in Burt’s eyes surprised her as she put a comforting arm around him. “He called him a fag.”

Carole didn’t want to believe it, but she knew that Burt wouldn’t lie about something like this.

“I’m so sorry! He doesn’t have anything against Kurt, he’s just unhappy about the move."

She hoped.

“Is this really necessary?” asked Carole, eyeing the clothes stacked over Kurt’s arm.

“Yes! Don’t you want to look your best for the first Hummel-Hudson family dinner?”

“Kurt, I don’t think I can afford all this. And your father isn’t that concerned about appearance.”

“More’s the pity,” Kurt muttered. “At least buy some new jeans. What about these ones? I know the waistline’s a little lower than you’re used to, but you’d look gorgeous in them.”

“Kurt, I’m not sure-”

“You’ll look a million dollars,” he smiled.

Carole gave in at his hopeful expression. "But only because you chose them."
