I'll be happy to continue at Hogwarts if you want me to, Albus. But if things should change, I'll understand if you have complaints and need me to resign. Voldemort's remaining werewolves have caused a lot of havoc and brought werewolves in general back into the public consciousness with a vengence. As long as dead werewolves bring anyone who kills them 100 galleons, I think there could be difficulties, and I don't want that to cause trouble for the school.

I understand what you are saying, Remus, and I can see the difficulties that you speak of, however, any complaints will have to come through me. You are one of the heroes of the war, and as such you deserve recognition, not vilification. I will put it forward that you are to be treated with respect, along with anyone else that the public might have difficulty accepting.
There has always been, and always will be sanctuary at Hogwarts, for those who require it.
Now, the real question is, do you want to continue to teach? Ultimately, that choice is not for me to make.

Sometimes I think hero and villain are just two sides of the same coin depending on whose point of view is uppermost at the time. If it comes to requiring sanctuary, then I will leave because Hogwarts is a school and that's where its focus needs to lie.

However, I don't wish to borrow trouble. It's more than capable of taking care of itself. If there are no objections, and it doesn't get in the way of educating the students and making them feel comfortable then...yes, I would very much like to continue to teach. I truly enjoy it.

I'm sorry to hear that you'll be retiring. Though no one deserves some time off more than you do, you will be missed and are certainly impossible to replace. I can't imagine Hogwarts without you.

Excellent. I have no objections at all, and I am sure the students' education will only be enhanced by your continued employment at Hogwarts. After all, what better place could there be to foster tolerance?
I am very pleased to have you on staff.

As for my retirement, thank you for your kind words, but I think perhaps Hogwarts might benefit from a change. Someone - whoever it might be - with fresh ideas and a new vision for the school, to take it forward into the next century.
I shall still be a round for quite a while yet, given the amount of work still to do. And then, I think I shall go sailing. I've always quite fancied owning a yacht. I'm looking forward to it.

Headmaster,

My job hasn't been confirmed yet, but I am quite hopeful. I hope you can find someone else to fill the important Muggle Studies post. I have lots of notes and lesson plans, and would be happy to pass my expertise these on to whoever gets the job.

Sincerely,

E. MacMillan

Ah, that makes things a little clearer.
I wish you the best of luck with your job application, and will keep the position open for you until you can give me a definite answer, one way or the other.

Thank you Headmaster, but I shall step aside and allow you to have someone definite in place by term time. Professor Tofty seems fairly encouraging about the job. I expect you know him and could put a word in for me.

Ah yes, I do know him. We haven't spoken for quite a few years, but he is an excellent professor. I seem to recall that he has a curious fondness for strawberries.
Thank you for finalising your decision, and best of luck!

You're retiring???

Having given it a lot of thought, I've decided that I will teach Ancient Runes for another year. Thank you for the opportunity, sir although Merlin knows how I'm going to hold down two jobs at once.

Sir, I'm sorry to hear that you'll be retiring. Hogwarts just won't be the same without you.

And as for Muggle Studies... I wondered whether you might ask my father. He doesn't want to go back to the Ministry, regardless of having been offered a full pardon and his job back. He might rather like to teach, if you think he would be good for it, and no one can say he's under-qualified.

Thank you Bill. It will be a pleasure to have you on staff.

Locked to Bill Weasley.

An excellent suggestion, thank you. I will certainly ask him, once I know whether there is going to be a vacancy. It seems that Mr. MacMillan's job isn't quite as definite as I had first thought.

Of course it goes without saying that I intend to stay but... Albus - you're really retiring?

Reply

wizardsdelight October 22 2008, 13:26:56 UTC
Yes indeed, Pomona. I am not getting any younger, after all, Now that the main threat to the wizarding world has passed, I would quite like to enjoy some quality time for myself, while I am still relatively fit enough to do so.
I'm not going anywhere for a little while yet - I will oversee the rebuilding of Hogwarts, but I will not be continuing as Headmaster, once it is complete.

But...but Headteachers of Hogwarts don't retire, they become...well. Part of the furniture, I should say.

Albus, I shall be sorry to see you go, but of course you more than anyone deserves some time to yourself!

Have you seen Minerva lately? She still hasn't remembered yet? When she is, I mean.

Ah, yes. I called to visit her just last night. Unfortunately she is still very much convinced that it is 1980, despite taking great pains to convince me that there is nothing wrong with her memory.
On the positive side, her transfiguration disfigurments are almost completely healed.

Headmaster, I am offering to teach Transfiguration, sir. I realize that I didn't finish my apprenticeship with Professor McGonagall, but I am certain that as soon as she's back in the right when well again, I can take up where I left off. If another and more qualified candidate is available, perhaps I could work as a tutor for those who need help?

Ah, Luna. Yes of course, you were Professor McGonagall's apprentice weren't you? I was a little out of touch for a while. Forgive me, I should have thought of you sooner.
Even when Professor McGonagall is back to her full health, I intend to insist that she reduces her schedule.
This sounds as though it could be an ideal solution, and I am sure that the experience will count towards your apprenticeship. I will, of course, be on hand to help with any problems you should encounter.

I will have a contract drawn up.

Albus.

Thank you, Headmaster. I do like teaching, and I think work is what we all need for a bit.

I will come to see you, sir, and present my lesson plans. Professor McGonagall left such a detailed curriculum that really there isn't much I could add to it, but I expect I'll always find at least one student who needs to march to his own tune. Or hers.

I would be glad to help with the work at Hogwarts, sir. I may not know construction well but I know how to use a broom and a mop. Mrs. Weasley is an excellent instructress in all sorts of ways.

Will the House Elves return to Hogwarts, sir?

Luna.
