Coming up on the end of my Spring Break... it's been a good break, very restful but still very productive. I've been recording like crazy this week. I thought I had saved some of the recordings I had done a while ago and I could just pick up where I left off but either they're saved in a folder I don't remember saving them in or (most likely) I deleted them to give myself a fresh blank slate. I'm more proficient at using ProTools and the MBox now, even going so far as to use plug-ins on some songs. I'm excited now because I know what I'm doing and I have all the tools I need at my disposal now. I've got about maybe 6 original songs completed, unfinished or in my head. If I had to make a tracklisting of them, it would go like this:
1. Fuck 2
2. Spiral
3. Trail of Tears
4. Song 1
5. Oogala (?)
6. Neglect
(*) Fuck 2 Remix
Trail of Tears and Oogala were my first attempts at writing on piano/keyboard (The part sounds like "oogala", hence the name although it's not its official name thank god). I wrote Trail of Tears going back to last year and it was my Multitrack I project. To date, it's my best song... both musically and thematically. Oogala was just a change of pace track that I came up with as a mimic of sorts to a drum solo I did once. I recorded Oogala last night and Trail of Tears will be the last song I record before I go back to UNH. This version will just be what I played on keyboard, which will be much more sparse and not as atmospheric but the part will still be there. Song 1, Fuck 2, and Spiral were all written on guitar. Song 1 is the first song I've ever written -- going back to freshman year. I had recorded it a few years ago but I think I deleted it. If my guitar doesn't act up, I'll try to re-record it when I get back to UNH. Spiral is just an idea. I've played the song before and have it committed to memory and I have an idea of where I want to go with the song... the only thing left is to record it. That'll be another one recorded back at UNH... if then. Fuck 2 is the song I recorded this week. It was just a riff I came up with, the nastiest one I could. I used to play it at night at home on my acoustic guitar. It's just a fun song to play, especially the solo at the end. This was the first song I used in a recording class but I deleted that version because in retrospect it didn't come close to the vision I had for it (I played my MBox box and my SM58 box as bongos for drums and my trombone as the bass... even though it's a tenor instrument). I recorded it electrically and acoustically this week -- almost had it electric and had it not been for my computer deciding to fuck with me and a wire in my guitar coming loose (I think) it would have come closer to what I had envisioned. Acoustically, however, it totally exceeded expectations. Granted, now I know why condenser mics are better for recording acoustic guitars but the sound of the guitar and performance totally surpassed my expectations... I love it better than the original version even though I wrote it on acoustic. The acoustic "Fuck 2" became my plug-in guinea pig; reverb and delay were finally brought out and used in an awesome way. I'm really proud about how it came out.
Other than that, my week's been fine. Today was movie day, going through Constantine, Saw and my new TNA Best of the Bloodiest Brawls DVD that I picked up yesterday. I might record tomorrow if I don't see V For Vendetta and play basketball again. I found my planner, which is a huge relief. Am I excited to go back? Not really... I know what's waiting for me when I get back. Right now, I'm gonna just enjoy myself and my break.
