Camp Rock: I might even be a rockstar!
Author’s notes: Well thank you all for your kind reviews, as I keep writing these chapters I am started to see a pattern growing here as the chapter lengths get longer and longer! All credit of song lyrics goes to Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus you will see two songs in this chapter. All other credit goes to The Jonas Brothers, all plot ideas and story line/OC characters are mine. Shout outs and thank you goes to all the reviews and the new alert/favorite list users that have done their part to read a story that has developed so much over the past month and still has room to grow. Dedications go to EVERYBODY who reads this story, writes a review, places me as a favorite, or alert list, you have waited so long for this chapter and I am so honored to have you reading this story, I am so happy to write it. I am now announcing something that I want to tell you before you read the chapter; it will show up in my profile later on as well, with small hints and goodies. This story started out well in tact that someday Lily would go on and create music somehow. I am now proud to say that there will be a sequel to this story. Which will with all due respect to the plot of the story lead to a third story. It took me a while to figure out if what I was passionate about reading and my knowledge could lead me onward, and I want to share my story. There will be a personal link to the sequels and I hope when you read it you can see why I was inspired to write it, because what happens can lead to butterflies upon a garden gates, those butterflies are your lock, the lock is beautiful and worth peeking at, looking at, capturing and eventually having the butterfly unlock the truth. The truth being you can be a rockstar (in Lily’s case) you can overcome change, because as I have said before without change there would be no butterflies. I am also happy to introduce a new character but I am not going to fully introduce her until the sequel, all you need to know right now is that she will make minor appearances in this story and she is Bridgette’s sister. Her name is Tess, she is three ½ years older than Bridgette and has graduated college and looking for a job. So with that, the new start of a new week at camp is coming to the forefront and we have to see how those campers are doing. This was not intended to be such a long wait, but I got sick over the week and than it was midterm week and 23 pages later of midterm material, I can now take a breath and work on the story, so thank you so much for holding on.
Chapter 11: Good and Broken
The twinkle of a million stars cast across the sky, Lily’s head moved upwards she shook her head a few times before she moved closer to Kevin and tilted her head her hair coming out of the hair band and laid her cheek on Kevin’s shoulder. She let out a long sigh and closed her eyelids. Kevin eyes were fixated on the blonde hair that brushed against his shoulder blade; he smiled down at her moving his chin down and giving a large sigh himself. He moved his index finger and placed it on top of Emma’s nose and tapped twice on it. She squeezed her eyes together tightly, butterflies surfacing from somewhere deep inside as Kevin tapped once more she let out a giggle as she opened her eyes back up again, looking at her smile gave Kevin chills down his back, he began to laugh as well, even though it wasn’t that funny their laughter separated them from the realization of what had happened tragically to Emma earlier. Their laughter seem to grow louder as Emma pressed her hand against her stomach, it hurt to laugh so hard but against the butterflies that were dancing along side, it felt like a steady calypso of guitar strings being played in tune. The nurse held her clipboard against her chest and gave a small grin; she tapped her patient on her shoulder and held a white thermometer in the air. Emma’s mouth clamped on, after two full minutes Kevin started trying to touch her nose again to take the seriousness out of the situation. The nurse frowned and walked away as Kevin gave a very serious look, a small giggle escaped Emma’s mouth before she snapped her mouth shut so not to mess with the reading.
“98.6, back to normal Emma!” The nurse said writing it down on her record sheet and giving her shoulder a squeeze. “Kevin if you wouldn’t mind while I finalize her records, I think she’s ready to be released from my grasp, bring her back to her patient’s bed, I want her to sleep a little bit longer before she can head out.” Kevin nodded and grabbed hold of Emma’s hand, her eyes snapped shut, she was thoroughly exhausted. She tried to drag her feet closer but they wouldn’t move they felt like rocks.
“Come on Emma, unless you sleep standing up?” Kevin asked laughing, Emma’s eyes slowly opened and with all seriousness she shook her head in disagreement. He helped Emma sit down and grabbed a chair, swinging it across they were facing each other, she became more alert when Kevin spoke again. “Listen I just want to tell you something okay?”
“Okay!” She said cheerfully blinking her eyes.
“You remind me of somebody.” He said, Emma’s chest got tight. “I know I haven’t known you for a long time but it feels like I’ve known you all my life. You remind me of somebody I’m missing right now, my close friend Lily Allen. I know that she’s a great listener, I’m going to call her in a few minutes, I’m sure she would love to talk to you, she always has good advice.” He said, smiling his eyes glazing over. Emma’s mouth dropped, snapping it shut she crawled under the blankets, pulling the top cover over her head. Taking that has a bad sign Kevin grabbed hold of the blanket and pulled it down, her eyeballs were just barley visible.
“Are you feeling okay? Do I need to get the nurse?” He asked worried, Emma pulled the covers down so that Kevin could see her lips.
“No Kevin, all I need is you…” She said the words spilling out faster than she could think. “… to be my friend that is.” Kevin understood she was just over-stressed and needed a few hours more of sleep.
“I think I can do that.” He said he could hear the door open behind him. He swung his head around, before his eyes could consume the sight in the door way, he looked back to Emma who’s body had seemed to go rigid, Kevin eyes darted trying to get an answer.
“What’s wrong Emma?” He whispered reaching towards her forehead and placing a hand on top wondering if her fever had spiked again.
“Bridgette!” She whispered back quickly, her eyes glued on Kevin’s hoping that Bridgette would walk right back through the door.
“What are you talking about?” He whispered back, he dropped his hand back to his side, if she wasn’t breaking out in a fever than why wasn’t she making sense? Emma’s eyes felt like they couldn’t move, she couldn’t see Bridgette move behind Kevin getting uncomfortable closer. It may have been the small draft of cold air that Kevin could feel prick at the skin of his arms but he slowly began to understand. “She’s here isn’t she?”
Before Emma could muster enough energy to reply, a dark shadow seemed to swallow the moonlight up. Kevin felt like he was being watched, hot breath traveled close to his ear.
“You know I can hear you?” Bridgette said shrill and airy. Kevin got a twitch in his neck causing him to stand up quickly, shoving the chair into the wall. His eyes darted to Bridgette who was standing there with both hand on her hips.
“Bridgette as much as I want to wish you weren’t standing here, I don’t think that you’re the first person that Emma wants to talk to right now.” He said drawing a finger up near Bridgette’s chest defending Emma. Bridgette took her hand almost dead even with Kevin’s, she didn’t like to be talked down to, like the ones she was talking to now, lower than her.
“I hate to think that your wrong Kevin, but that’s why your brain is incapable of knowing the truth. The truth being that I belong here tonight to tell Emma what’s going to happen now that the record label is all mine. So why don’t you just step over there away from me and let the adults talk.” Bridgette said coldly, she handed a folded piece of bond paper to Emma, who took it out of her hand slowly.
“So your still here Emma? I bought you this card, people have been talking but I set them straight. Rumors have been flying around, things about how you’ve cracked under pressure. I told them that was what they were speaking was all lies that you needed a break, I think you and I know why your really here, hiding as usual.” Bridgette said with almost a gesture of kindness.
“Alright that’s enough Bridgette she doesn’t need you around to rub salt in the wound.” Kevin said getting closer, Emma sat bolt up right re-reading the piece of paper that was a sad attempt at a card.
On the outside of the card was a landscape of mountains, everything seemed to be a picture perfect moment, and hand written below the picture was handwritten in cursive writing, it seemed almost too perfect.
Stay just the way you are…
Blank inside with a hard black sharpie:
Good and Broken! ~Bridgette
Lily could hear Bridgette’s cackle; Kevin could see the words from the corner of his eye, Kevin read the words over properly in his head, Emma seemed to tense up her breathing shallow.
“You know have you ever considered a job at Hallmark Cards? I’m sure they would love your work! Reject Pile by Bridgette. Now if you wouldn’t be so kind as to leave Bridgette, Emma can breathe again, look what you’re doing to her?” Kevin said point at Emma his arm close to her ear. Emma threw her arm out against towards Kevin, she could speak for herself, it was her old record label that Bridgette was bringing down, and she wasn’t going out without a fight.
“I’m not leaving Kevin, not until I finished saying what needs to be said.” Bridgette remarked getting closer to Kevin.
“No, Emma doesn’t need this, and I’m not going let you stay! Leave Bridgette!” Kevin practically yelled.
“Oh please Kevin, I don’t leave because somebody said so, Nobody, no how is going to make me leave...” Bridgette said pointing at her chest; she got caught short as a small voice came from the bed.
“No Bridgette, they all leave because of you!” Emma said as Bridgette turned towards Emma, out of rage Bridgette snapped her arm back, causing a domino effect as the last domino fell at the end of the line, Emma own hand retraced back smacking her with burning force on her neck. It brought instant tears to Emma’s face as she drew her chin to her chest, drawing her knees she felt the singe erupt, she felt a gentle hand on her head, Kevin whispered sweet nothing’s into her ear as she tried to bring her head up.
“Emma? Emma are you alright? The pain will stop I promise, lift your chain up and take a breath, the first gulp of fresh air you get will ease the pain, nobody’s worth crying over that has caused you pain, especially not Bridgette!” Kevin said as Emma slowly lifted her head up, Bridgette looked concerned; a red mark across Emma’s neck was starting to turn to purple.
“Oh Emma I’m so sorry…”
“Really?” Kevin asked giving Bridgette the evil eye.
“Well sort of, but anyways I can fix this! Listen my sister Tess is a nurse and she’s always telling me about her patients and how everything can be fixed with an icepack! I’ll go get one for you!” She said and turned around knocking at the nurse’s door, before the nurse could ask about the cause for an ice pack, stat!
Lily laid down flat on her back, Kevin with his arms folded, biting his lip. Looking down at her, she tired to smile; she took her hand away from her neck and flopped on her side. Her necklace dangling gracefully against the white linens. Bridgette returned moments later, a cold ice pack in her hand, Lily could see the frozen crystals on the top of the label, fresh out of the freezer.
“Are you sure you know what your doing?” Kevin asked as he was pushed aside as Bridgette picked the chair up and moved it closer to the side of the bed.
“Bridgette, I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to be a tow...OW!” Lily screamed sending shivers down her back as Bridgette trusted the cold ice packet under her neck. “Towel over the ice pack.” She tried to say through gritted teeth.
Bridgette looked smug and threw her head back to Kevin. “See I can be helpful!” Lily buried herself under covers, hoping Bridgette would get out of the chair and leave already, the ice pack against her bare skin was making her skin go numb.
Moments passed away slowly, Bridgette had her eyes on her so-called patient as Lily was losing feeling in her toes. Kevin had made his way to the other side of the wall pacing, if he got any closer he might just provoke Bridgette, and she was sitting too close to Emma which could cause more harm than good. Why couldn’t Bridgette leave well enough alone? Why was Bridgette being so nice and not telling the world about her secret identity, something didn’t seem right.
“Alright come on Bridgette!” Lily said angrily wedging her shoulder so that the ice pack shifted away from her neck. However Bridgette placed her palm down, so that it was stuck from going anywhere. “Would you please leave you’ve done enough?”
“No listen Emma I can fix this.” She said pointing to Emma’s neck, her necklace shining off of the reflection of Bridgette’s eyes beaming down. Emma wasn’t going to pretend anymore that Bridgette was trying to be nice so that Emma would let her have Wildest Dreams Record Label fair and square.
“You can’t fix what’s already broken. Bridgette will you listen to somebody else besides yourself for once and let me just tell you something?” She asked, Bridgette had already tuned out; she was poking the ice bag and noticing that her neck was turning purple, the bruise was there to stay, until it faded away. Emma didn’t wait for a response.
“When my Uncle created the company it was his wish, I know that is hard to believe Bridgette, but all of his life, he wanted to do something for his family, nothing was more important to him, we’ve always been together and that’s the way it’s going to stay, even though he can’t be with us right now I know he still his. Because he also believed and it didn’t matter if the company never made it, he wanted to show me how if you are passionate about something you can’t just drop out, and take yourself out of the game. So now it comes down this, you got the record label and I can’t stop you from what your about to take, part of my history and my life. Just please do me a favor and don’t screw it up.” She said tears threatening to fall down.
Bridgette’s cruel laugh came out from her mouth, as she poked at the icepack a little more; it was inches away from Emma’s guitar pick necklace chain. Bridgette had heard what she wanted to hear.
“Emma, please look who you’re talking to, I’m Bridgette!” She said giving the ice pack one last sharp poke, the chain wet, Bridgette placed her hand on the edges of the icepack, and she could feel it slide, slippery against her fingers.
“Don’t…screw…it…up!” Emma said with slowly with a defining boom in her vocal chords. Bridgette could feel her temperature rising in rage, she felt her fingers come up off the ice pack and hit against the chain of Emma’s necklace. Bridgette flung her arms away glaring down at Emma, the icepack hooked around the necklace, pulling the chain down, Emma stumbled to get the icepack away, but it was a lost cause. By Bridgette’s slight of hand she had caused the icepack to weigh down the delicate sterling sliver chain, before anybody could understand what would happen next, it happened. The icepack temperature pressure split the chain in half, the pack crashed to the floor, the ice inside breaking into a million pieces. A long strand of the severed chain lay forgotten on the floor boards lying like a snake. Emma flung her body over the side of the bed breathing heavily she held the guitar pick tight in her hand, the chain felt cold in between her fingers. Slowly she raised herself up, watery eyes like daggers staring at Bridgette. Bridgette began to smile, as Emma tried hard to find out why Bridgette was so hard, and unfeeling.
“Oops!” She said giddy, her voice thick as honey. “I guess it’s true what they say Emma, some links are weaker than others.” Bridgette stood up and scooped the forgotten chain half off of the floor, holding in between her finger, she pulled hard, the chains popped off, and with every pop of the chain and the next one after that, Emma’s eyes began to twitch out of reflex, her stomach felt unsettled. Bridgette left four links on the chain; Kevin grabbed them out of her hand and pointed to the door. “Some links are weaker than others, and you’ve got a whole chain full of them.”
Bridgette pointed at Emma in malice and than headed for the door slamming it hard. Emma felt numb, all she could do was stare at the other half of the chain, in Kevin’s hands, four links left to try and fix her damaged necklace that Joe had given her for her birthday. Four links! Four links one for Emma and Lily, one for Joe, one for Kevin, and one for Nick.
As Kevin drew closer Emma drew her guitar pick tighter around her clasped hands and towards her chest so that Kevin wouldn’t recognize its rich rose color, the engraving of her nick name on the back. Her lips were tight, and her emotions were drained. Kevin sat on the edge of her bed, running his fingers of the silver links, his head was drawn down. Emma’s hand began to shake. Kevin placed his hand on hers, stoking it gently, his other hand with the chain grabbed onto the piece Emma was holding, Kevin knew instantly that it was important to Emma that it would be fixed, for it did no good being broken. Bridgette had made it clear that broken was just another step on the right direction for Emma, but Kevin knew that being good and broken wasn’t Emma in the least, if anything she wasn’t going to hold on to this broken chain as if it was something gone drastically wrong in her life, she could move on. Bridgette was pushing it too far! It was enough that Bridgette had gotten the record label, but by lying to Kevin before, and messing around with Emma as a person she was creating pain, that ached so bad. He felt steady as a rock when he got off the bed; he had to find something to fix the chain, so that Emma could fix her necklace. The longer she waited the longer it was reminder to her of Bridgette’s doings. Emma looked up as Kevin got off the bed with a bounce smiling down at her. She began to shake her head in defeat.
“Whatever…” She tried to say but it came out in a far-off whisper. She turned her cheek away and grabbed a thick notebook from her bed stand, her lyric book. Nick had brought it around for her a few hours before and she felt like she could complete the song lyrics she had been working on for class on Monday.
“No!” He said firmly taking the chain and his hands tighten its grasp, he was determined not to let Emma fall apart. “Don’t’ listen to Bridgette your not good and broken, and just because this chain is broken I know that it can be fixed, as your friend I want to fix the chain for you, I’ll be back I promise! Try and get some rest Emma, sweet dreams!” Kevin went to the door and opened it up, moonlight spilling in. He walked out closing the door behind him.
Lily’s eyes seem to zone out but she had to get the lyrics off of her chest, so opened her palm slowly looking down the guitar pick without a scratch down at them all the verses were complete, and now the chorus came to her from her mind to her writing hand, she began to write it out.
Chorus:
Out of the fire and into the fire again
You make me want to forget and,
Start all over
Here I come
Straight out of my mind or worse
Another chance to get burned,
And start all over.
Out of the fire and into the fire again
You make me want to forget and,
Start all over
Here I come
Straight out of my mind or worse
Another chance to get burned,
And start all over.
I’m gonna start all over!
She signed her name at the end of the lyrics satisfied after a long whole year of creating them herself, but something was still missing in those lyrics. She thought that a year to create them had been long enough, but she couldn’t imagine what else she could create to make the song worth her pain she felt knowing the record label was good and gone. She leaned back, her head on her pillow; she pulled the rest of her pony tail out of her hair and turned the page. She looked at the date on the next page, almost a two years had passed since she had worked on the lyrics on this page, she had began creating the guitar notes right after her uncle passed away, but somehow the lyrics came choppy. She looked down at what she had.
Verse one:
Are you overloaded
Candycoated
Your life’s imploding now
There’s a risk worth taking
A pain worth aching
On this hallow ground
We can let go
Don’t hold on
To all of life’s hardest parts
When we think of stopping
Let’s keep on rockin’
To the rhythm of our hearts
Chorus:
We can we can break outta here
Jump on over there where
Where the air is clearer
We can, we can forget the pace
Winnin our own race
Become a broken chain, yeah
We are broken chains, yeah
Good and Broken
“Good and Broken” Lily whispered to herself, earmarking the page, she felt a sharp pain on her neck; she felt down her neck, it was tender. She wanted to cry, but sleep overtook her as she took the notebook and felt like she had created a song that was taunting her. When in actuality it was only making her stronger, she was going to sing it and become find her inner-rock star outside of her wig. As she lay flat, her black and blue mark, felt better as she turned her head to the side, she pulled the covers up and pulled her guitar pick closer to her hand under the covers across her stomach. She was out like a light in a matter of seconds.
