He had resisted her charms for so long after the defeat of the Dark Lord because deep down, he still thought of her as Ron’s girl. And even though Ron was dead, he couldn’t bring himself to betray his best friend by making a move on Hermione, no matter how much he wanted to.

Following the triumphant defeat of the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters, the wizarding world had licked its wound before it restructured itself. Under the new Minister of Magic, Arthur Weasley, the wizarding world still hid itself from the muggle world but it had modernized itself. Gone were the archaic Victorian principles that had led to the Dark Lord’s devastating rise and fall. On a personal level, Harry became just another young wizard trying to make it in the new world that he had help to create. He was no longer the boy who lived, and he had never become the boy-who-had defeated-the-Dark-Lord. He was just Harry Potter.

Hermione, on the other hand, retreated into a quiet job as the librarian at Hogwarts. Harry and the surviving Weasleys faithfully visited her but it was obvious to anyone who cared to look that she was wasting away with her memories. The few times that Harry had tried to comfort her had been awkward moments that had little healing impact on her.

It wasn’t until the Christmas break in Hogsmeade that he realized what he was doing to her. She needed him more than ever and he was failing her because he was afraid of betraying the ghosts of their pasts. Ron and Ginny were both dead yet he had allowed them to stand in the way of the living. Hermione was alive, while he had given all of his favours to the dead. Harry quietly attempted to rectify the situation, but Hermione still pushed him away.

At first he was afraid that he had waited far too long to save her from the ghosts that obviously haunted her. And he believed that he was doomed to be the sole survivor of the infamous Gryffindor trio. Until Molly Weasley stepped in and fixed everything, and forever after Harry would believe that she was an angel in disguise as a mother.

It took a strong lecture from Molly to make Hermione realize that she was making a mockery of Ron’s death by refusing to live. She told her all the clichés, such as life was far too short to waste it pining over what could have been, and for once they seemed to work. Hermione served the remainder of the year at Hogwarts before she left the dusty tomes behind to prove that she was still the brightest witch of her age.

And for once, Hermione took a risk and she placed her hand into Harry’s and she let go of the past and the dead and all the tragedy that had occurred on a fateful summer’s night when Ron, Harry and herself had faced the Dark Lord and only the two of them survived. She let go of her promises to Ron, even though it still broke her heart that she would never see his smiling face or feel the warmth of his hugs, and she turned to Harry and created a new set of promises with him.
