Blast from the Past: Barleygate

This is from circa 3 years ago. I'm reposting it as a kind of exercise in looking back over certain events, and examining them with fresh eyes.

I'd like opinions on the text under the cut, which is long.

passive aggressive notes left by roomates to make something out of nothing. a common grievance. unless the note is hilarious or witty it's usually the note-leaver who did it wrong. just talk to the person.

leaving a bowl with barley in it doesn't seem so bad to me? if they were at their wit's end, sure, but you say you'd been cleaning up so, whatever.

That's pretty much how I felt about it (throw it out, and come bitch at me later if need be), but at the time it was my first roommate situation after leaving my ex, and I was very much of the opinion that I was obviously missing something.

Oh lord, let me tell you how much I hate notes. I had roommates who were like that and were still messy as heck. Maybe it's just me, but if it was just a bowl and I knew you were tired, I'd have washed it and whatever. Life goes on.

I admit that I'm relatively crazy (possibly OCD level) about cleaning dishes immediately after eating. I couldn't live with a roommate who wasn't that way as well but I know that about myself and warn potential roommates.

Still, people are always more important than things. You had been improving previously. You were tired. There would have been no way to tell whether it was deliberate or an accident but I don't think much of anything merits an obnoxious note. That just creates drama and unbalances the whole household and doesn't help anyone.

I think whoever noticed the dish should have cleaned it or left if for you to clean. The drama, theirs and your response seems pretty much unnecessary from an outside point of view. It's a little thing.

Living with those roommates must have been (must be?) a nightmare.
