This Can Only End..., 3/?

Dec 10, 2009 22:25

It was 2 o’clock in the morning, and Arthur just wanted to be asleep in his bed. HoweverHow, Merlin had invited him out with Morgana and Gwen and he couldn’t say ‘no’ to Merlin. If he did he’d get this little pouty face in reply, which, although adorable, stared into him like he’d just killed Merlin’s kitten (and he didn’t even have a kitten!). The sad part was that he could even pull it off over the phone.

So Arthur now sat in his crappy Corolla with Merlin after suffering through an extremely long and painful interpretation of Cinderella - no one had spoken throughout the whole production. Merlin and he had chuckled through it, but the girls had loved it.

“It spoke to the true meaning of love, don’t you think Merlin?” Gwen had said.

Morgana had then interjected, attempting to divert Gwen’s attention to her from Merlin, “You are so right, Gwen. Plus did you see the actress playing Cinderella? She was hot!”

After an hour of conversation Merlin decided that Arthur should drive him home, and Morgana should drive Gwen home. Everything went fine until Arthur asked something incredibly stupid, “What did you decide to do about Will?”

“Yeeeahh…. Well, I have made the decision that just ignoring our problems is probably not the best course to take.”

“What a novel idea,” Arthur said with fake incredulity.

“Yes, quite. I think…yes, I think I need to break up with him. I mean we have only been going out for three weeks, but it needs to happen. However, that’s not the only problem. Did you hear about Owain?”

“You mean kiss and run?”

“Yes, Arthur,” Merlin bit out with no joy. “Something kind of happened with him…while I have been dating Will.” Merlin eyes immediately jump to his side window, guiltily.

Arthur stopped the car in the middle of the road (what? He’s a Pendragon), “Are you…? You idiot! What happened? Tell me right now.”

“Arthur, you can’t just stop the car in the middle of traffic!” Merlin protested, to which Arthur looked out the window pointedly to the empty roads surrounding them. Merlin just huffed his submission, “Owain and I have been hanging out more since the kiss and run, which happened before me and Will, ok? Yesterday he was talking about how glad he was that we reconnected and then….” Merlin looked away blushing.

“And then?!” Arthur practically screamed.

“Well, he sort of pushed me up against the wall and we full-on made out for about ten minutes before going to Trig.”

Arthur stared blankly across the car at Merlin.

“Arthur, say something. Please?” Merlin whispered into the quiet car.

“Will is gonna flip a shit if he finds out. He is not going to take this well; you know how possessive he is. You can’t tell him,” Arthur stated completely shocked, but at the same time, not so much. Merlin’s love life had always, really, been fucked up. Things like this happened to him all the time, but not usually while dating someone else.

“I wasn’t going to!”

“That may be the smartest thing you have done so far, Merlin. Is Owain the reason you are breaking up with Will?” Arthur asked with real incredulity. His opinion of Owain, or Will for that matter, had never been particularly highly. He’d always thought it was silly for Merlin to jump from mediocre to mediocre. But what do I know? Arthur thought, Maybe Owain is an amazing kisser.

“No, definitely not. I mean I wouldn’t turn down Owain if he asked to go out, in theory, but he isn’t the one that I am really into right now.” Merlin said blushing again and Arthur found it quite becoming.

Arthur began to finish the drive to Hunith’s house now that the crisis had been averted. “Another one? Fuck, Merlin. What is this, suitor number 6?”

“Not a ‘suitor’, no. I don’t think he likes me like I like him, if you know what I mean. Plus he probably shouldn’t get involved with me. It just wouldn’t work,” Merlin finished utterly dejected.

“Merlin, if this guy has a single brain cell then of course he is as into you, as you are of him. You are brilliant. Anyway, you can’t just mention this guy and not give me his name. So, spill!”

Merlin seemed to glow after Arthur’s comment, but when he heard the excitement in Arthur voice at revealing the name, he automatically shut down, “NO! I, mean, I shouldn’t have even mentioned it. It’s not important.”

“Yes it is. I need to know the name of Suitor Number Six -which is his official name now, by the way,” Arthur finished jokingly, slightly picking up on Merlin’s discomfort but not dropping the subject.

“Again ‘not a suitor’, but no, I am not going to tell you anything and that’s final.”

Except nothing was ever ‘final’ to Arthur, especially when someone said ‘final’, and so for the next ten minutes of their car ride Arthur berated Merlin about giving him a hint. He started wildly guessing people such as Paul O’Grady (Merlin’s response: “Who doesn’t have a crush on him?”), David Tennant (Merlin’s response: “Oh God! I would get down on my knees in public for him. If he was my Doctor, I would be constantly sick.” Arthur hit him over the head for that comment), and even Gwen (Merlin’s response: “She’s not a guy! Plus, Morgana would slaughter me.”)

“Jesus! Fine. The only hint you’re getting is that the ‘suitor’, as you call him, has an ‘r’ in both of his names. Ok? Now give it a rest, Arthur!”

But Arthur didn’t. He, instead, spent the final five minutes of the trip just shouting out boys names he knew contained two ‘r’s.

“Harry Rack?”

“No.”

“Fred Tucker?”

“No.”

“Willard Stoller?”

“Ew, and no.”

When Arthur stopped the car in front of Merlin’s house, Arthur figured it out. “Oh my God! You are in love with my father! Uther Pendragon. Ew Merlin, you are fucked up.” OK, maybe he didn’t really figure it out.

“No, Arthur! I’m leaving, now! Thanks for the ride,” Merlin said exasperated and moved to get out of the car, until he heard: “Merlin…” said barely above a whisper. He turned around and looked at Arthur’s face and knew that he’d actually, finally, figured it out. Frantically he pulled himself from the car and raced around the car, trying to get to his house. Unfortunately, Arthur was faster and much calmer.

Arthur got out after Merlin, leaving the car running. Merlin had gotten about three steps around the car when Arthur grabbed his wrist and pulled his body into his own. One hand wrapped tightly around Merlin’s dwarfed wrist, the other he shoved into Merlin’s raven hair pulling his face closer to Arthur’s. Their lips smashed together and their teeth clicked against each other to create a sloppy but passionate embrace. Arthur didn’t care that it was a little uncomfortable and the kiss was more a smashing together of faces. He just felt the moist lips and body heat radiate from Merlin, which was odd because he was known for his near constant frozen fingers and blue lips.

When Arthur pulled away, Merlin’s kissed red lips shone in the light given off by the nearby street lamp and his mouth hung open slightly in an accidently pornographic manner that made Arthur’s pants tighten.

Merlin’s hands had hung limply as his sides the whole time, not quite sure what was happening to him, until he swallowed twice and whispered, still wrapped up in Arthur hold, “Wow.”

“Yeah. That was… I never knew you felt that way,” Arthur concurred, with amazement creeping into his voice.

Merlin just smiled a dirty smile and leaned in to trespass sweetly again, as if all of the pieces finally clicked together in his head. Arthur’s mind rebelled against his body and met Merlin half way in a chaste kiss that didn’t continue as Arthur had pulled away. “Sorry. Sorry. It’s just that you are dating Will, and I will not be that guy, Merlin. Don’t make me be that guy.” Arthur placed his forehead against Merlin’s fighting his overwhelming desire to ravage Merlin up against the side of the car.

Merlin stepped away from the car and out of Arthur’s grasp mumbling, “Of course. I didn’t mean…I shouldn’t have even mentioned anything. Unless, I mean, does this mean you’re interested?” Merlin asked, his cobalt eyes shining with sincerity and staring into Arthur.

At this Arthur’s head immediately perked up after falling down towards the ground when the dark haired boy had stepped away. “Ye-Yes. Yes, it does. I mean, well listen. You know how I feel about relationships in high school and stuff. But once, if, you get rid of Will and rid of all of your crazy suitors, and you asked me: I would be there. I’m always there. I would be interested. I just can’t deal with…after everything, you know?”

“Yeah, yeah. Of course, Arthur, of course,” Merlin replied with vigor as if jumping at the chance to agree with whatever Arthur had said. Merlin looked down at his feet and then back towards his house and pointed over his shoulder with his thumb, “I should probably head home. You know how my mom gets.”

Arthur nodded his head in agreement and watched longingly as Merlin walk away. Arthur got back in his car, turned off the radio and looked at the dark, empty road laid out in front of him.

What the fuck just happened?
