Super Meh.

Despite no real interest in football, I watch the Super Bowl as much for the commercials as out of habit. So far, the ads have been fairly lackluster. Here are a handful of favorites from the first hour, including a new Publix ad! Yay!

-- I liked the Underarmour sneakers one for showing a wide variety of people, even if the actual ad was pretty rote.

-- The Diet Pepsi Max (with that awful song) made me laugh aloud, because oh, yeah, I've been there. Yay for semi-chronic insomnia. *sigh*

-- My favorite commercial ever is the Publix Valentine's Day one in which a little boy bakes his mother a cake. (If you've never watched it, go watch it now and then hug your momma.) At the start of the broadcast, they aired a new one here in the Southeast! A third grade teacher is making cupcakes with her class. The kids start spelling out letters in the frosting, and they add up to "Look Outside". She goes to the window and sees her boyfriend with flowers and a ring. AWW. Their ad agency is magnificent at making corny situations genuinely heartwarming.

ETA: Okay, wait. My second-favorite commercial was the Obama ad right before halftime. :)

Anyway. I'm TiVoing the game so I can pause when I lose interest. Since I'm ambivalent about the teams, I'm going with the Patriots because while I really like New York City, I adore Boston. :) I also want to know why the FOX interstitial ads feature a linebacker Cylon. Hmm.

Otherwise, I've been knitting quite a bit -- almost done with another sock to finish a pair -- and toying with a fic idea. My hand was *sore* after too much knitting yesterday, but this afternoon I got a mani-pedi at a new salon that's pretty damn posh for a shopping-strip storefront (Beth, it's next to the Publix.) And while I'm here, a few links....

-- The NY Times knows how to win my heart! They have a cool article on how an Irish tax on plastic bags has made the use of cloth bags skyrocket. Yes, resuable bags are my big crusade. The Times also has an interesting essay on the decline of the romantic comedy.

-- Slate has an essay in praise of incandescent light and offers tips on how to fake your way through Fashion Week.

-- proggrrl's Galactica Sitrep has quite a few new BSG commercials, via Pi (thanks again!). Check out the last one; the very first shot had me both wide-eyed and giggling. :)

-- Variety reports that NBC considers extending Friday Night Lights. Mo Ryan also has a good writeup on the last two episodes, and bop_radar has an insightful post about it.

-- Nikki Finke has an update on the WGA strike talks, in which the union president says to just be patient. I remain cautiously optimistic, which might as well be the slogan for my whole life. :)
