And so begins Pushing Daisies Watch. Or, rather, "Watch everyone else on Earth love this show while I stand in the back and scream!" At least, that's what I'd assumed. I've said before that the pilot really got on my nerves because the cutesiness was over-the-top, to the point of feeling manipulative. ("Aren't we clever! And whimsical! And adorable!")
Check out Mo Ryan's blog for a more eloquent version of why I went into this dreading how it would inevitably become The It Show among critics and LJ friends, while I grew increasingly resentful and bitter.
Well, I was wrong. Sort of. I still stand by my frustrations, but I'm here to admit that I quite enjoyed it the second time around! Somehow, all that cutesiness didn't bother me this time. I found it much more charming and much less manipulative than when I first watched it. I still think it's too much of an Amelie rip-off -- and I'm amused by the
NYTimes review that said "If you hated Amelie, you'll love this" -- but I'm cool with that now, especially since I imagine the writers and directors will ease up on the whimsy in subsequent episodes. So. I'm still far from A Fan, but for now I'll eat some pie and see how things go. And, if nothing else, it'll provide some gorgeous icons.
And now to the main event. Bionic Woman: Was Katee hot? Yes. Was she awesome? Yes. Do I care about anything else? No.
Definitely an improvement over last week, though that's damning with faint praise. Jaime's conversion was way too easy, but whatever. This show doesn't hold up well to intense scrutiny, so I'll just move on to the random observations:
-- Katee! Yeah, she's still channeling Tricia a bit too much, but I can live with that. I'll bet she gets a kick out of wearing sex-ay clothes after all those years of fatigues. So, she was married to Jae? Huh. It does put a damper on my Sarah/Jaime OTP, but I can handwave that since it'll be a while before NBC opens its eyes to the femslash potential. And for tonight's gratuitous self-pimping,
here's the Sarah/Jaime ficlet I wrote after watching the pilot. -- Oh, and I hope they clear up Sarah's backstory soon, and explain why she went so batshit and lost control. I'd rather the marriage dissolution be an effect, rather than the cause.
-- I rolled my eyes at the airborne virus wiping out poor little Paradise ("Paradise Lost", get it?!?), but that'll be yet another "whatever" for the episode. That sort of thing is stock in trade for this type of show, so I guess I'll have to get used to it.
-- WILL IS DEAD! Wow. I only know promo pic spoilers for this show, but last week I'd assumed he made it through the gunshot. Except why do I have a feeling he's not really really dead? He has to come back and, in a tearful scene, explain that it was never his idea and he always loved her and he only "died" to keep her safe! *sigh* I'm also vaguely intrigued by how he'd been keeping files on her and that her bionic-izing wasn't the accident it appeared to be... but not as intrigued as the producers probably want.
-- I was also pleasantly surprised by Bitchy!Jaime in the teaser, especially the ill-advised bathroom sex. I'd always thought "douche" was very '70s, but it looks to be making a comeback. Of course, any grow-a-set points Jaime scored went away when she got a bit silly later on. Still, I'm holding out hope that she won't be quite as bland and stupid as in the pilot. And I'm hoping they back way the hell off on her "I'm a realistic, sympathetic girl!" anvils, especially the stuff with the sister. Yes, I fast-forwarded through the talent show. Blech.
-- Since I never watched Grey's Anatomy, I have no opinion of Isaiah Washington as an actor, but I learned a long time ago that I have to separate performances from real-life assholiness, or else I'd have nothing to watch on TV or movies. He was fine here. Not great, but fine.
-- HERC! Dare I hope for a very special crossover episode in which Berkut travels to Dillon, Texas, and gifts Jason Street with some new bionic legs?
-- Okay, I love me some BSG, but the shot of the Pegasus explosions from "Exodus II" was WAY TOO HOKEY FOR ME.
-- Loved how they found not-so-clever ways to show off her rack during the training scenes.
-- And speaking of gratuitous cleavage,
this promo shot of Katee in episode 5 (spoilerish) is hi-larious. As I said to
drewcypher when he posted it, they really need a separate photo credit for her rack. "BIONIC WOMAN -- "Faceoff" Episode 105 -- Pictured: (l-r) Katee Sackhoff as Sarah Corvus, Molly Price as Ruth Truewell, and Katee Sackhoff's breasts as themselves." Pity that it's such an unflattering pose, though!
So. It was better than last week, though it still has tons of room for improvement. And at least it's a fun distraction while we wait for BSG to return, if it ever does. *sigh*
Can't remember where, but someone said they wished Katee's scenes would be posted to YouTube so they could watch them and skip everything else. I love a good video-editing project, so I fired up the TiVo and clipped Sarah's scene from tonight. As always, the quality isn't perfect (I have no idea why it ghosts stuff like the Target commercial), but for now it'll suffice.

ETA: One more Katee thing!

TV Guide's video of their BW photo shoot. Love how Katee says she'll put "knows how to knit" on her resume. I uploaded a bunch of screencaps to
my LJ gallery.
