After saying yesterday that I suck at sewing.... I MADE A PURSE! And it looks gorgeous. So awesome, in fact, that I almost put the pic out here in the open so I could show off. Then I decided it was too big for friends-pages, and anyway, posting un-cut photos is rather annoying. Therefore, click on the cut-tag for
the cutest quasi-boho patchwork bag ever.
WHEE! I used this
Süße Sac tutorial, which was far easier than expected. The beige stripey fabric is from an Urban Outfitters sheet/bedspread that I got ten years ago. The bright orange Arabic-style design and the more orange-y paisley (the second-to-last square on the bottom right) is from some swaths my parents brought me from Alexandria, Egypt! And the other striped fabric is just some remnants from lining a failed bag attempt last year.
(Can you tell that orange is my favorite color, followed closely by green? ;)
I also made some of those little "yo-yos" from the original pattern. Here's a close-up, though they're a bit hard to discern because I didn't differentiate enough from the base fabric; next time I'd probably use a monochrome. They're a fun detail, though, to give it a bit of whimsy.
As I said earlier, this pattern is surprisingly easy -- hell, I *suck* at sewing and still managed to pull it off. You don't need more than a half-yard of any of the fabrics, and most of them can be culled from stuff you have lying around the house; I'm already thinking of making another pastel one from some old button-down shirts I was going to donate to Goodwill. The patchwork was much easier than I'd thought it would be. I started it last night and finished it this afternoon. The most time consuming part was making all those little flowery things. Next time, though, I might make the bag a bit longer so that it can hold full-sized magazines and papers -- right now they just peek out the top. :)
So, I'm quite pleased with myself! I might not actually use the bag very often, but I *love* doing projects like this.
And to keep this post from being all about my obsessive craftiness, how about some fandom snark?
dryope posted photos of some of the BSG cast -- and a few Stargate folks -- at a Comic-Con party Saturday night. Katee mostly looks great... except for a very unfortunate fashion choice that just might eclipse
Jamie's green flip-flops for sheer WTF-ery.
Let's start with the good.
I love this photo that
I snagged from ohnotheydidnt; no credit given there, so a big thank-you to whomever took it! I think this should go in The Headdesk Hall of Fame.
Another darling one from ONTD. When the show's over, those two should star in their own buddycops movie, directed and written by Nora Ephron back when she was good at romcoms.
Everyone seems to have had fun at the party that night. I love how Lucy manages to look like a tween star from The Disney Channel, with Mary as her big-sis chaperone. Katee grins like I do, which is to say squinty-style. RDM's still looking like
Conchord Bret's older clone. Eick? Whatever. Tricia's also lovely... for now.
Tricia is a stunning woman. You don't get to be a world-class model for nuthin'. That's why I'm so dismayed by this photo in which she looks kinda like a drag queen.
Katee starts off looking GORGEOUS. I love the flippy hair. Face is a bit shiny, but that's fine by me. And the cleavage? WOW. I'd suspect silicone if not for the fact that she's been rockin' the boobs since before the Mini, and she's always had a very curvaceous (and sex-ay) figure. Major kudos to the lingerie saleswoman who sold her that push-up bra. I also love the blue dress. It's cute and summery and altogether darling. I'm a big fan of empire-waists, and she manages to wear them well without looking pregnant.
... And then it all falls apart. Cue my icon.
Tricia's dress is kinda cute, though spoiled by her weird posture. Hey, I love green. Mary looks STUNNING (and she apparently went bra-shopping with Katee.) While I'm not fond of the french manicure, I'll give her a pass. So, we have three beautiful women having a grand ol' night out on the town... until we look down.
YELLOW SHOES?!?
Oh, Katee.
Look, I know it's hard to find something to wear with blue. Black's kinda boring, and matching the shade of blue risks overkill. But YELLOW? The shoes themselves aren't even bad -- in fact, they're kinda cute. I'd even wear those yellow shoes... but not with that dress.
*sigh*
An APB out to my friends who are coming to Atlanta for Katie*Con Dragon*Con next month: I propose that we kidnap... er... invite Katee out for a shopping spree at Abbadabba or Phipps Plaza or any shop that does not sell yellow shoes.
ETA: On the plus side, we have
Katee and Trucco looking freakishly adorable.
(Thanks to Latte for the heads-up!)
ETA2: And EntWkly has a long
video interview that starts with Katee and continues with bits from nearly everyone on SciFi, including Atlantis, Eureka, and then, of all people, Sarah Silverman. A few BSG spoilers at the very end -- just stop watching after the second clip with Mary McDonnell. :)
