At one point you've got it, then you lose it. Then it's gone forever.
This afternoon, I headed to Publix for baking supplies, and of course I forgot to get some butter. The woman in front of me at checkout bought three fresh lobsters for a total of $97. Wow. I had to restrain myself from boggling. I'm finally at a place in my life where I'm making a decent income -- at least, for a public school teacher. Still, I can't imagine spending a hundred bucks on lobsters that weren't cooked for me at a fancy restaurant.
I think it's time to reveal myself as a Mah Jong addict -- and I know I'm not the only one out there. I've been playing Mah Jong Towers Serenity for hours on end. Best thing about it is that they post a handful of new layouts each day, which is great for those like me who are too cheap to shell out for the full version. Go forth and waste time, campers!
dtissagirl posted a fabulous movie picspam, including Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and one of my all-time favorites, Run Lola Run (Lola Rennt)! Like Pavlov's dog, any mention of that movie forces me to put in my DVD and bliss out. I've never been one for top-ten lists, but here are my ten favorite movies:
1. Trainspotting
My favorite movie forever and ever, amen. How can you not love Sick Boy's unifying theory of life? (which happens to be my LJ title.) Or maybe the kickass opening? I love every single minute -- well, except maybe the baby scene. Yikes.
2. Run Lola Run
See above. ;) Though if she got rid of Manni, I wouldn't mind one bit. And as I watched it this afternoon, I was struck by her similarities to Kara Thrace. Not really in any list-able ways, but they have a very similar kickass vibe. Plus, they're not conventionally pretty, but they're *beautiful*.
3. Shallow Grave
Yeah, okay, I have three Danny Boyle movies on this list, though that's entirely coincidental. Promise. I remember seeing this in a Belfast movie theatre the weekend it opened, and though the characters are all dreadful human beings, it's just so beautifully wicked. Bonus points for introducing Ewan McGregor to the world, even if he looks profoundly dorky.
4. Lost in Translation
In retrospect, I'm able to see the flaws, but it's still such a beautiful, quiet movie, which we don't see often enough these days.
5. The Bourne Identity
Sure, I originally only wanted to see it for Franka Potente, but I found myself loving it. Made me very nostalgic for my year of living in Europe, and the overall feel of the movie is smart and chilly-cool, while still being a spy thriller at heart. I love the chase scene set to Paul Oakenfold's "Ready Steady Go".
6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
If you've seen it, you'll probably understand why it's on my list. Among other reasons, I love the unconventional narrative style. I already adored Michel Gondry from his video for Bjork's "Bachelorette" (if you haven't seen it, go watch NOW), and this movie really built upon and expanded his creative vision in such marvelous ways.
7. 28 Days Later
Post-apocalypse kink ahoy! It's just plain brutal, especially the alternate endings, and yet it still manages to be hopeful. Though I'd seen and loved Christopher Eccleston in this and Shallow Grave (and Jude, and many others) long before he was ever cast in Doctor Who, I get a kick out of rewatching this movie and laughing at the idea of HIM playing the Doctor. ;)
8. Before Sunrise/Before Sunset
God. SO much love. Who knew that three hours of two characters simply talking could be so fascinating and delightful and poignant and lovely? Technically two movies, but they really exist as one. I hope that Linklater, Delpy, and Hawke are able to do a third installment in another eight years, like they hope. Even though the ending of Sunset would seem to preclude the premise of a third, I have faith that they could pull it off.
9. The Sound of Music
My love for this one has already been well-documented. ;)
10. Independence Day
ALIENS BLOWING SHIT UP! Whee! Yes, I saw this one on July 4, 1996, the day it opened (so it's not just my Laura Roslin love talkin'.) I'm a disaster movie junkie, and this is the best of the best. Cheesetastic and stupid and really only worth it for the first 60 minutes... but you can't go wrong with people running and screaming as alien laser beams blow up the White House. Kickass, baby. Kick ASS.
It's 24 night! Whee! I love this show. It's big and dumb and ridiculous and shit gets blown up! I can't understand how critics (and Emmy voters) take it so seriously, because I'm too busy laughing at all the wackiness. I've seen tomorrow night's eps and don't want to accidentally give out spoilers, but those two hours had some huge "ZOMG!" moments. Hey, where would I go for some Chloe bitchface icons?
ETA: Okay, this is really pissing me off. I'd had a poll asking which Jack was the biggest badass: Bauer or Bristauer; however, I had to reformat it, and now it's not working at all. Hmph.
