Following links this evening led me to Mark Reads. Apparently, he ran a popular blog in which he read all of the Harry Potter books, and now he's taking on The Hunger Games. He's posting about each chapter as he reads, snarking about various aspects but genuinely enjoying it. Really interesting stuff!

Also, as I typed this, taragel gave me a heads-up ( Read more... )

I pay my rent by doing background work inbetween auditions in NYC. I've worked on almost every major project that's filmed in the city. I'm curious about how the industry works in Atlanta. Heck I'm curious about Portland (where they film shows like Leverage) I mean, you can't have a huge base of actors in Portland. You'll have some, but not like New York where EVERYONES an actor and almost everyone is a union actor. I'm curious if they find they can hose the non union actors into really unfair payrates. You occationally get a casting notice for people who want to pay non union bg 25 dollars for a 14 hour day. Or my favorite, they want nudity and a lot of it, but they can't pay (but it's a great "opportunity!")

There are some shows in New York that have a specially negotiated contract with a lower rate like Gossip Girl (and all CW shows), and Onion Sports but usually as a union actor you know exactly what you'll be paid. It's the non union that shows will pinch pennies on (which really sucks.)

If you want do win the stagger on contest and get paid for it, find out when they're casting bg again and sumbit yourself. That way you can stagger on AND tell me what the non union rate is! :) Just prepare for insanely long hours. A typical costume piece show will film for at LEAST 14 hours. It takes that long for 1920s outfits, so I can't imagine what their schedule is with ZOMBIES.
