more name discussion

Dec 31, 2008 20:03

Well, my mom is here and she is adamant I not name girl Pace. She hates it.

She has lots of opinions and thinks I should name child for myself but should use my real first name of Melissa as middle name.

She is open to Harper though.

But isn't it my baby and not hers?

I think you're right: she had her chance to name kids. But if you were seeking honest feedback, she's entitled to her opinion. Honestly, I prefer Harper myself. ;) Love Pace for a boy, but it's a harder sell for a girl, I think.

I see your point, but I did not ask her feedback. In fact, asked to NOT discuss please. But she insisted and kept discussing.

Well, that's quite different then.

I remember my mom actively disliking a boy's name on our short list: Eli. (though years later, since we are not Jewish, I'm not sure why I was so drawn to that name!).... anyway...my mom had valid reasons though...she felt it would be a constant reminder of someone (her husband's deceased wife's family) who had tried hard to make her life a living hell ever since she dared marry her DH five years after her death. Their family name was Eli. I saw her point, and crossed Eli off the list. She would have had trouble ever uttering the name fondly.

Such is not the case at all with Pace though, and quite the opposite, so it is odd that her feelings would be so strong, no?

When I was pg w/ Pete, my MIL told me directly, several times, not to name him Pete (after her husband, no less!) So when pg w/ Luca, I refused to discuss with most anyone, except my cyber-friends and my sister. I didn't really tell anyone what I was naming him until after he was born and the birth certificate was done. I guess if your mom insists on discussing, say "uh-huh" and block it out and do what you want in the end.

Now, that's really odd! Why would she object to him being named after her DH? And what's not to like about Pete? Did she not like the idea of "junior"s, even though Pete is not a junior? Or was it the formal name she objected to?

You could go uberMississippi and call her Mary Pace. Or Anna Pace. Or Martha Pace or Julia Pace. Or another smocked-dress double name. I say strike 1 & 2 if it will make it easier for you and Chris to come to a happy, joyful decision (or couple of options that await a good look at the baby). The saint's name will be more traditionally feminine (unless you use a male saint), and Pace deserves its place, whether first or middle. It seems to me that using Pace is more meaningful to you than using Melissa or Page.

This should be wonderful and happy, not unduly stressful.

Thank you for your thoughts! It has really made me look at what is important to me. Using Pace is more imp that using Page or Melissa. However, I would rather not name after me if it means using a second name I don't like. So I will use Pace somehow or not at all if that makes sense. I think. Was naming Caden this hard? Probably but all that stuff goes away. Chris says he now wants to just read a baby names book for inspiration.

grins at Chris and ((hugs)) for the stress. If he must read one, I always recommend Beyond Jennifer and Jason, or anything by the authors thereof.

I remember that naming Scarlett was a lot harder than naming Sophie. I wonder if that happens often when you have more than one of each gender? I mean, you change, times change, and you used the dream name the first time around, KWIM?

I'm thinking of you.

Yikes. What a tough road ahead - trying to please so many wrt girl names! I love all your choices; especially Paige Gianna. Paige Callero sounds great, I think! Connor has a classmate whose mom's first name is Harper, and her two sons names are Ford and Gates. Unique, eh?
