I finally saw Disney's Meet The Robinsons today. STOP SCROLLING RIGHT NOW! Thank you. I know all advertisements for this movie made it look mediocre. We all hated that Disney had stopped their 2-D animation in favor of this. But people: this...is a masterpiece. You have to believe me.
First of all, you start to appreciate the look. It's still Disney style. Think of those Disney shorts that had humans in them instead of anthros. Remember the future ones? Now remember the Tomorrowland of your childhood? That's the entire style mixed with 50's retro flare. Secondly, the humor is brilliant! Tears were rolling down my face from laughing so hard. From in-jokes, to broad jokes, to body language. Perfection. Finally, it has HEART. I swear the ice in my chest cavity melted for these characters. It presents love and hope and family, and a message. That message, told in full at the very end was all i needed to shed a tear and wish for a hug. I don't want to ruin it for anyone who NEEDS TO WATCH THIS MOVIE.
So it all got me thinking about ol' Uncle Walt. I firmly believe he would WANT to explore 3-D animation. He was always so excited about new technology and trying to do the impossible with it. Without compromising the story or design he would be all for pushing the computer medium. That's what this movie is about. I think they had Walt's spirit in mind throughout the whole process. Not to spit in the face of traditional animation, but to show the next level that Disney has always striven for. I also firmly believe Walt wouldn't completely drop 2-D either because it's his roots and beloved by so many. I think he would choose to continue both. If a movie calls for CGI, fine. But if it needs that finer, subtler touch only something drawn and painted by hand can do to breathe life into it, he'd leave the pencil to create.
This movie was marketed all wrong. I wish i'd gone to see it in theaters. I wish more people had cared to see the message. Meet The Robinsons is something to look back on and, no matter which side of the debate you're on, you smile.
