Last weekend, some friends and I went to see two performances of Randy’s latest play, Harbor. I had read several reports about it from friends who had already seen it so I was not surprised with the less than happy but realistic ending but the fun of seeing how the four characters got to that point was delightful.
As usual Randy nailed the role of Kevin, an aspiring writer, who with his husband Ted, an architect, live together in a lovely home in Sag Harbor very happily until Kevin’s sister Donna and her teenage daughter Lottie show up to wreak havoc on their lives. Kevin has been trying unsuccessfully to write a novel for ten years and though he thinks his life is great, it isn’t until Donna tells him that she is pregnant and wants him and Ted to raise the child that he realizes that he wants the children that he and Ted decided they didn’t need to make their lives complete. Hilarity, angst and mayhem ensue. I really enjoyed the whole cast especially Erin Cummings’, who I remember as Sura wife of Spartacus on the Starz TV series, portrayal of Donna who is uneducated, irresponsible and crude and Alexis Molnar’s teenage Lottie who is sensible and well-read and longs for a normal life rather than travelling around living in a van.
Randy excels at playing the immature and sometimes clueless Kevin who eventually realizes that his idyllic life with Ted is more of a father-child relationship than a marriage of equals. It's a rude awakening for him and he decides to be his own person and make some life changes.
Some really funny moments are when Kevin declares that he is not the woman in the relationship as he dons a pink feathered tiara to wear for Lottie’s birthday party and when he and Donna return from a bar where they got properly soused and tell Ted that they gave themselves Indian names. Donna is “moose with papoose” and Kevin is “squats on cocks”.
It’s always interesting to me to see other actors at Randy’s plays and I spotted Aisha Hinds who plays one of the lesbians on Under the Dome who was with James McDaniel who played Lt. Fancy on NYPD Blue for several seasons. They sat right in front of me.
After the play on Friday night, Randy came out and seemed very happy to see me and one of my friends who he hasn’t seen in awhile. She got a picture with him and one by himself and I told him I would get my picture with him next year in Bilbao.
