New Years Eve was the best evening I've had in a very long time, hands down.
sidneyeileen, myself and M. and D. all decided, pretty much 3 weeks ago that we were going to this New Years show. That led to frantic sewing, interspersed with things like Christmas, Graduation and the like that culiminated in all of us only getting 4 hours of sleep the night before our big 6 hour drive to L.A. (and me slicing my finger with a rotary cutter at 1:30 in the morning).
I slept for most of the car ride; we got there about 12:30 with only a wee bit of trouble finding the hotel. We were really lucky to get a hotel a block away from the club, called
The Kyoto, in Little Tokyo, which I was completely unaware of until we got there.
Me: Oh my god you guys I have been here before! THEY HAVE A KINOKUNIYA! And a BAKERY!
Seriously, Japanese bakeries are so much fun. Where else can you buy Spaghetti Pan?
We wandered about for 3 hours enjoying the sights (and the warmth!) of the area, waiting for our room to open.
The rest of the evening was spent getting ready (showers, makeup, checking of props, sewing on snaps to shirts that didn't get done, etc.).
AND THEN WE WERE OFF.
Serious. Business.
Anyone who knows me, knows that I never dress up like this (and by "this" I mean corsets and makeup and "fancy" hair). I'm still new to costuming as a hobby, though I've adored cosplay for years. The thing I am really loving about steampunk is how nice it is and how you can go crazy with individuality in your costume design. A large portion of the shirt was made by Sid and under her guidance, so this was a closet costume as far as things go. Everything in the photo is hers, even the corset. By some twist of nature, I fit perfectly into nearly everything she made/wore about 10 years ago. It is freaky (and allows me to make out like a bandit with all her old clothing).
Look at how snazzy these people are! We got in line at the club entrance down the alley and saw all kinds of people dressed up so nicely (also a plus with steampunk: you can look classy). These kind folks were at the front of the line and I could not resist taking a picture with them; sadly I do not remember their names but they were really nice and fun to chat with.
The Edison itself was gorgeous. Pictures do not do it justice. But here are some I took!
The place was packed with such an amazing amount of detail, hidden alcoves and, well, everything. I really wish it was closer.
They had performers from
Lucent Dossier interspersed throughout the crowd. This lovely lady was playing the saw at the entranceway.
And Abney Park was AMAZING as usual. I love seeing this band perform and can't wait to see them again (in 3 weeks!). I've never followed a band before so this is a new and fun experience. :D
Have some blurry pics!
During the performances, Sid pulled out the bubble gun that M. had modded and blew crazy bubbles around the pit and stage. It became a big hit with the crowd. We are trying to see if we can have more for the next show. XD
It was such an amazing night and worth the price of the ticket, the drive and Sewing Hole (TM) we all were in the 2 nights before the event!
Now to sleep.
