'Bambino!' Episode 1 comments and picspam

Earlier this week, I watched the first episode of jdorama Bambino! with subs and I enjoyed it, with reservations. Bambino! stars Matsumoto Jun as Ban Shogo, a young apprentice chef who is sent to a fancy Italian restaurant in Tokyo to gain some experience outside of his small town education. In his hometown, Ban is well-considered, but once he arrives in Tokyo and comes to Baccanale, his over-confidence in his own abilities and his lack of humility in dealing with his elders in the trattoria's kitchen are on display and he has to learn some hard lessons.

Overall, I liked it because its production values are high, I love the setting (a fancy Italian restaurant in Tokyo), and Jun is good so far. What I didn't like: how unrealistic some things are. Clearly, they're playing up the drama of the interpersonal conflicts, but I found it utterly bizarre that in a business setting, where supplies should not be wasted to put someone in their place, Ban keeps being given tasks with little guidance or supervision that generate waste - particularly the scene at the end with the brodo - when the entire restaurant's service is dependent on certain things, I hardly think they would casually let someone screw up and therefore screw everyone else up just to teach him a lesson. Also, no love for the chef striking one of the sous chefs in the first episode - my opinion of him went way down after that.

My favorite character so far? NOT BAN. I KNOW, RIGHT? Sorry, Jun, my affections right now are reserved for Yonamine Tsukasa, played by Kitamura Kazaki. He's wonderful and fun and has a delicious glint in his eye. So much love for Yona! :)
