Ugh, I have this feeling like I'm coming down with a cold - at first I thought it was just allergies (and I'm still holding out hope) but, well, yech.

Anyhoo, icajoleu came over tonight and dragged me out for a shopping trip to Tower Records - funny, he bought ONE CD and I bought FIVE! *laugh* I picked up the new Snow Patrol: Eyes Open, the new Keane: ( Read more... )

I have heard many similar complaints about UH's material - lots of people seem to love Deep River, but not so much love for the rest. As for me, I first heard Distance and I fell in love with it pretty hard. I don't typically listen to R&B music at all, so for me it's perhaps the novelty, and she was the first Japanese artist that I fell in love with. I enjoy just about all of her songs. Is she the greatest artist ever? No, but one thing that I love about her is that her voice is consistently good and effortless. Compared to some of the Japanese music I listen to (*cough*JE groups*cough) that is a really wonderful thing! *grin*

*shrug* Anyway, taste is so subjective. We like what we like, and what floats my boat might not float yours. Also, I've realized over the years that I'm much more tolerant of things (not just music) than most people I know and I never expect anyone to like what I like. And also, I like such a wide variety of things (also, not just music), and I have different standards for different things. In general I'm much more forgiving of Japanese music than I am of Western music. Not sure why, but again, it may just be the novelty - I've only been listening to it for about six months now, and I really haven't listened to much of a variety within Japanese music at all. Perhaps I'll be more critical when I find someone I like more...?

Music is of the moment though, and there are many of Utada Hikaru's songs that have an emotional current for me now. So I will always love her for giving me that. :)

Oh, and thank you muchly for the well-wishes. I'm uncertain if I'm feeling better...I'm hoping things improve throughout the day. :)

I agree, musical taste is subjective. I guess I tend to be more critical of Utada's work since I've followed it around the beginning of her career. I know she's capable of superior work. (I'm the same way with hyde/L'arc~en~ciel, Gackt, etc) Her recent work just hasn't given me the same impact as her music in Distance or Deep River. First Love was a good album, but I felt she was still growing with that one. I have to say you're right about her music and the emotional connection it brings. For me, alot of her earlier music can be tied back to memory.

Strangely enough, any part of me that wants to be critical flies right out the door when it comes to anything Johnny's. I got into this fandom really late, my friend claims it was me being in denial. =P

and I still haven't watched the recent episode with subs yet. I should do that soon.
