How much do I love you for taking the time to write a nice long response??
I really do ♥ JE and all the randomness that comes with it. I mean, who else but Kame can go from gorgeousboxerinpurplecloak to prettyemoinwhitesuit to skinnyboxerthatknocksoutSubaru (but how cool were the green lasers that made out the boxing... arena thingy? The name has escaped my head. DBs must've ate it O_O) to scaryassclown to weirdfirethingysurroundedbyweirdgreenthings to awesomeacrobat to spiderman (this part was down right WTF) and then after ALL THAT, come out with AT-TUN and sing songs. Seriously.
I'm fairly new to this fandom, and I've had to learn very quickly to roll with the randomness. When I wrote this not long ago, I was still trying to understand how all this exists because it's an entertainment niche that isn't exactly niche and is just so foreign for someone used to North American/European entertainment culture. That's part of why I love it - I love it because it is SO DIFFERENT and that they get away with things that would just never fly over here in the U.S.
The word you were looking for? I'm pretty sure it's a boxing "ring." Sure doesn't look like a ring, though, huh? Word to everything you wrote about the fact that all of that randomness can exist for the same character in the same musical and somehow, Kame can pull it off.
I asked in the second picspam about the showtime at the end, and the response was fairly matter-of-fact, as though "OF COURSE" and "WHY EVER NOT?" - that having a pop concert at the end of a musical was totally cool and normal. Well, it's definitely cool, because YAY, we get to see them sing more of their songs and interacting as they would for a pop show, but um, this was a musical, right? I just wanted to make sure that the showtime at the end really had nothing to do with the musical. It's like you get two shows for the price of one. Seriously, Only In Japan. And WHY do they have pull out the feathers and the shiny fabric and the costumes that look like THREE of them could fit inside each one? Sometimes I think Johnny is trying to kill them with heatstroke by making them jump around like that wearing something that looks like a costume designer just threw a pile of fabric, feathers and fur on a dummy and safety-pinned it all together!
I know virtually nothing about Kanjani 8 - except that there are 2 guys from NEWs in the group. That is the sum of my knowledge, so you are educating me.
You ask a really good question about the crying in Kizuna - how can we know whether the boys are "acting" (dubious as their acting is on stage - I'm sorry - these guys for the most part, are NOT cut out for stage acting, not really. A few are good, some are okay, and the rest, it's best not to mention) or if they're genuinely emoting. Since I hear this was the second to last performance, I can see that they might get a bit choked up but Oh My God, why is there crying in JE? The first time I saw Ueda cry during the Oky show, my jaw dropped onto the floor. CRYING? THERE'S NO CRYING IN POP MUSIC...er, but I guess there is in Johnny's. Heh.
Oh, GODS, it's so good to talk to someone I can WTF? to, because it's been a bit lonely for me struggling to get used to all this. My only other JE pal has been very busy lately so I've had to scratch my head and TRY TRY TRY to understand this bizarre, whacky world I dropped myself into. ;) The more I see of JE, the more I "WTF?" and yet...I'm still here, and loving the hell out of it all...despite being a ridiculously confused most of the time.
So I think it's safe to say that in JE anything goes, so long as there are pretty boys. Pretty boys make ANYTHING possible and EVERYTHING palatable. :D
I could go on endlessly about JE~ It doesn't look as long in the comment box... so I just keep typing and typing. Heh, as I've said - I like to ramble. Lots. XD
And yes, ring is what I was looking for. Oh the SHAME. I blame Dream Boys. Next thing you know I'll forget the really hard words like... CAT, or something. ^^".
Two shows for one. BARGAIN. When the showtime came to an end I was almost expecting the musical to start again. Why? Just because. And I would've found it completely normal. JE. HEAD. MESSES. BAD. SENSE. NO. MAKE. :)
Oh and the costumes! I think they're made extra huge because Johnny likes to pass them on to the next generations of Jrs (or so I've heard). Thus the timelessness of some (♥ shiny aluminium). Actually, scrap my reasoning. Passing them on doesn't mean they need to be big. LOL, unless Johnny thinks there'll be a Jr whose waist is actually wider than 20inches. AKIRA SHOCK. (Gosh I'm so horrible today. But no, I really do love JE!)
Yeh I figured it might've been coz the shows were coming to an end, but still. Did they forget that they would be coming at 2 seconds later for the mini concert?! I'm leaning towards the crying-for-storyline reasoning though. If anyone was feeling emotional about the show ending it would've been Kame. And he was fine ♥
LOL ditto for WTF buddies XD Just as I think nothing can surprise me anymore, something new pops up. Like last week's GnoArashi. Confused no? Then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE download it at http://down.clubbox.co.kr/johnnyjr/78w58 if you have time. It's completely and utterly CRACK GALORE. I don't know where to begin, but I laughed myself silly until my insides threatened to come out... and that was ALL THREE TIMES that I watched it. *dies*.
*jumps up and down* but but but they did the same for the earlier Dreamboys with Takki I've seen that one but not this 2006 version. They had Showtime where, basically, Takki sang to his heart's content.
And as for the costumes, I think that KAT-TUN's comstumes fit who they are. They always seem to wear the same Kame and Maru enjoy showing nipples, Ueda and Jin love long robes, Koki's into hoodies, and the others probably dress Junno up Junno doesn't care. But god, Koki's hood in the end is too much XD!! And Ueda Tat-chan is dressed up like a king! I seriously think the KAT-TUN boys have contests on who can outdress the other.
Again, I haven't seen DB 2006 yet, but they had a green laser ring thing in Takki's Dreamboy. In the behind the scenes part of the DVD, they were playing around with it, totally fascinated. Yabu kept sticking his hand in it and I think it was KAT-TUN'S Maru (?) that stuck his head in it and pretended to die. Silly boys.
About the K8 boys, well...LOL! Well, they always seem to wear those feathery costumes of theirs on stage. Kanjani just likes to make us go "OHHHH GOD WTF XD!" But my theory is that Kanjani8 doesn't have nearly as much money as KAT-TUN does. That's why their PVs look so horrible compared to KAT-TUN's. Low budget. But I LOVE THEM TO DEATH! They can pull off anything coz they're a great band! BOYS ON CRACK! HIGH ON SUGAR AND LIFE AND EACH OTHER
If you like KAT-TUN and Kanjani8 together, you should watch some Jr. High School episodes. I don't have any downloaded but here's one on Youtube and
somehow I missed this!winterspelJuly 13 2006, 20:46:29 UTC
but but but they did the same for the earlier Dreamboys with Takki I've seen that one but not this 2006 version.
Okay - I haven't seen Takki's Dream Boy yet, so I didn't know there was a precedent for it. Even still, though, it's weird. Johnny's musical are not normal! ;)
I love your comments about the costuming trends for the KAT-TUN boys - you're right, of course, that these tendencies in their costuming do exist, but I hadn't noticed it exactly like that before, so thank you! (I'm still really new at all this...) See, my question then is how much say do the boys really have in their costuming? I wonder if their "image" (presented through their costuming, I mean) isn't carefully decided on and then cultivated...or maybe I'm overestimating JE. And I absolutely agree that Koki's red furry hood at the end of DBs is just...yech.
K8 really cracks me up! I'm looking forward to learning more about them. :)
Re: somehow I missed this!seiweiJuly 14 2006, 03:14:27 UTC
So, I finally watched Dreamboys, and here's the story behind all the LMAO and eye candy. I stole most of this from my friend Lina, who somewhat understands (at least more than I do). Between the two of us, this is what we got: - subaru is the champ with a little brother yuta with a heart problem - kame's a boxer turned model who plays subaru's rival in the movie of subaru's life, produced by yoko - but there was a fight between both side's entourages, and k8 wanted to quit. kame agreed, but the kame entourage didnt want to because they cant afford to quit since they owe yoko something - ryo and jin were the neutral characters (I love jin's character!!). the two were were kame and subaru's childhood friends. - kame and subaru fight, the bar in the glove that i think yoko slipped in, subaru fell into a coma, kame gets help from ryo to escape, ABC suggest that kame hides in the circus, koki and maru make awesome clowns and nearly castrate kame, a bunch of kame solos that i skipped over - the jin and yuta were in a graveyard of some sort. i'm not sure why there is tension between kame and jin, but they started fighting, yuta picked up the knife kame brought. jin was like DON'T TOUCH THAT and accidently fell into it. kame tells yuta run away and give him the knife, and takes the blame for yuta, but then shakes off the cops and runs away. - EVERYONE looks for kame. - there was a hospital scene where subaru comes around for a while. ryo was there, and jin in a wheelchair but he miraculously got up and walked towards subaru's bed. subaru said that it's better if he dies so they can give his heart to yuta. because the main reason why subaru wanted to make the movie was for yuta to see it before he dies, because yuta has a heart condition - everyone searches for kame again. - i guess yuta ran away from the hospital and was angsting on top of a building. kame tries to save him, but falls off, and meets angel subaru who told him it wasn't his time to die yet. he has to get back in time to save yut, get subaru's heart out of his body and put it in yuta. so instead of losing subaru, yuta could be "one" with him. and kame was alive again. - subaru's group corner my poor uechan, and pretty soon both groups start beating each other up. kame shows up to try to explain what subaru said to him, but seeing him just made everyone angrier. then jin and ryo show up to save the day and to say that kame was right and that the transplant is taking place immediately. yoko turns out to be evil and manipulative. then everyone makes up and sing kame's Kizuna together.

You're *wonderful.* Seriously, that was beyond awesome. It's even more whacked than I thought, though! ;) I thought I heard a rumor that BNS might be subbing this...?
