Oh I was a Joss fan first as well. Big time Buffy fan.
But, Joss is far from perfect. He's got these ideas in his heads, images he wants to create, and he's willing to push characters around to get that image, even if it goes against the characters themselves.
For Joss, his iconic images always come first, before characters. It's one reason why I think that Firefly is probably one of the weakest of his creations. (I couldn't even get past ep three of Dollhouse, but I blame that on ED's lack of acting ability)
Torchwood is far from perfect, the fact that RTD is too much of a Whedon fanboy has somewhat to do with that. But unlike Firefly, I actually loved all the chars on Torchwood. That's something I never managed to do with Firefly. But then as far as I'm concerned, the only actor from Firefly that even remotely managed to sell his character to me as a person, rather than as a chess piece, was Adam Baldwin. Who really makes me glad to see him on Chuck, since hes the only Firefly actor I actually wanted to see more of.
(Though I'll give you that the actress playing River, was a lot better on T:tscc, even though Cameron was never my fave char on that show)
