The response to Obama's election in London has been really heart warming. I work in Brixton and when I got off the train yesterday there was an older black lady with her jacket open proudly displaying an Obama t-shirt. A young black man ran up to her with a huge grin on his face explaining that he just had to stop and talk to her about it. I think they might have even hugged. If you've spent any time in Brixton (or London in general), this behavior is certainly unusual.
I have been on a cloud for the past 24 hours. I had tears in my eyes when I heard Obama's acceptance speech. I believe in hope and change and all that stuff at the moment. I am not completely ashamed of my country and my people. If you've spent any time with me, this behavior is equally unusual.
Today I'm listing to a Silver Mt. Zion just as a little pinch to remind me that Obama is not the left-wing messiah everyone is writing and talking about. This is not the end of racism or poverty or free market capitalism or American domination around the world.
But fuck it if it doesn't feel nice to have a momentary break from total cynicism *.
* What I am cynical about is British news reporter's almost complete inability to pronounce Barack correctly. People, the emphasis is on the second syllable and the second 'a' is long. They can't get this 'a' right anywhere, pronouncing Tupac like he's one third of a six-pack.
