O to be a dragon...

If I, like Solomon, . . .
could have my wish--

my wish . . . O to be a dragon,
a symbol of the power of Heaven--of silkworm
size or immense; at times invisible.
Felicitous phenomenon!

~ "O To Be A Dragon" by Marianne Moore

I was reading some new picture books today and one of them was called Call Me Marianne by Jen Bryant. It's about a boy who goes to the zoo and meets a woman dressed all in black. He retrieves the woman's hat after it blows away, and then discovers that she is "not a scientist" but a poet. The story was okay, kind of boring; the pictures were nice but the background was speckled which made it kind of hard to read the words.

And then I reached the last page and read the back matter. The lady in black, Marianne Moore, was a real poet (although the story itself is about a fictional encounter with her) ... and she went to Bryn Mawr.

I always have a secret smile for when I discover other Mawrters. :) So then I decided to look up some of Miss Moore's poetry. I'm trapped in the children's section at the moment, and thus cannot go hunting through the adult nonfic, where we apparently have a few copies of her collected poems. But there's a kid's book about Miss Moore, which I am now perusing. It's a mini-biography and also has some of her poems, including the one above, which I liked and wanted to share. :)
