OMG, people, summer school sucks. D: Though, I haven't been to class yet, so hopefully that will be redeeming. But seriously, EVERYTHING on campus is CLOSED. All the food places (which, granted, are mostly gross fast food places) close by 3pm - and this includes all the COFFEE BARS so I cannot get my TEA FIX for my biweekly 3+ hour evening lectures. (I suppose this is incentive to be a good person and get a new travel mug to replace the one that died a while back, and then I can make my own tea in the student lounge and save the world one less paper cup at a time, but STILL.) The shuttle schedule for the summer is utterly stupid and therefore I have to Metro to/from school, which is fine except the Metro is not free. Also, the student lab in my college's own building is CLOSED, which is annoying because that's the nicest lab on campus, being rather new. And thus, I am out at the performing arts library, which is about a 15 minute hike from the main part of campus, but which I prefer because 1) it's prettier than the main library, 2) exercise is good, and 3) it's less crowded than the main library (though apparently that's not so much a problem during summer when there is NO ONE here).
So, yeah, I start YA lit tonight. It meets on Monday and Wednesday, from 5:30pm to 8:45pm (over three hours!!). The syllabus is very busy, and I will probably end up working half-days on school days because I am still desperately in need of money and I have to take a few precious Thursdays off for Germany trip meetings. Oh, this summer is so busy busy busy!
Summer Schedule:
June 1 to July 10: YA lit on Monday/Wednesday, plus as many work hours as possible.
June 15: Submit abstract and bio for MAPACA conference proposal. (Hint: it's not the alpaca conference, although that would be kind of interesting.)
July 10: Fly to Chicago for ALA conference.
June 24-28: Get in at least one day at the [
Smithsonian Folklife Festival]. WALES is going to be there! Also "the power of words in African American culture" and "Las Américas: un mundo musical".
July 11-13: Conference it up, librarian-style. Hopefully do some networking for employment leads. (This includes figuring out what sorts of employment I am interested in!) Also, I have been informed by the assistant curator at work that I absolutely MUST take the architecture river tour, which is not too expensive so I'll try to squeeze that in if there's any boring sessions.
July 14: Fly back to D.C. (and hopefully have enough time to grab me a crêpe somewhere).
July 17: Pre-departure meeting for Germany trip.
July 19: FLY TO GERMANY. :D
July 20 to August 8: Arrive in Munich, squee a lot, refrain from frolicking in the library!castle, go on exciting weekend trips, and do other awesome librarian-type things (IN A CASTLE). :D
August 9-10: Say auf Wiedersehen to class group, and then meet up with
lavvyan,
berlinghoff79,
sonadorita, and others for more squeeing and reading of telephone books. :D
August 10-23: Fetch parents from Munich airport and go off to ITALY for two weeks, including Venezia, Asolo, Firenze, and a few other smaller cities, and much sampling of gelatto.
August 24-28: Fly back to D.C., show parents my awesome flat, and do some general sightseeing stuff (and, you know, recover from my FIVE WEEKS abroad).
August 31: Fall term begins. (Also, my last term before graduating in December!)
Vaguer/less pressing deadlines: Podficcing and sekrit project with
berlinghoff79.
So 'tis a verrrrry busy summer, but also verrrrry exciting!! :D
